Neither eBay nor Mercari is automatically the better place to buy or sell used goods. For a buyer, compare the full checkout price and the protection that applies if the item is missing or not as described. For a seller, compare the fees for the specific listing, shipping costs and coverage, and who bears the risk if a return or delivery problem arises.
Mercari’s stated fees for qualifying new or updated listings include a 10% seller fee and a 3.6% Buyer Protection fee, each calculated on the item price plus buyer-paid shipping. eBay’s seller fees vary by category and listing setup. Those differences make the right choice specific to the item and transaction—not a universal platform winner.

How to choose between eBay and Mercari
Start with the particular listing, not a general reputation or headline fee. A used item’s total cost and risk depend on its category, asking price, shipping method, applicable marketplace fees, and the reason a buyer might need a return. The same platform can be a better fit for one transaction and a worse fit for another.

The policy details below reflect the official US-facing terms described by the marketplaces, including Mercari’s fee structure effective January 6, 2025. Fees and policies can change; check the live listing and current policy before committing to a transaction.

What buyers should compare
Compare checkout totals, not just item prices
Mercari’s stated Buyer Protection fee is 3.6% of the item price plus buyer-paid shipping for listings that are new or updated under the fee structure effective January 6, 2025. That charge means two listings with the same item price can have different totals if their shipping charges differ. Applicable taxes and any other charges shown at checkout also affect what you pay.
Older Mercari listings may retain legacy fee terms until they are updated. So the listing’s original date alone may not tell you which terms apply. Review the actual transaction breakdown rather than assuming every listing has the same fee.
The eBay Money Back Guarantee policy reviewed here describes protection for eligible problems, but it does not establish an across-the-board buyer service fee. That is not proof that a particular eBay checkout has no other charges: review the order total shown for that item. The available terms do not support a blanket claim that one marketplace is always cheaper for buyers.

Understand what each platform’s protection covers
eBay’s Money Back Guarantee covers eligible cases where an item does not arrive, is faulty or damaged, or does not match its listing. A seller may be responsible for return shipping in those cases even if the seller does not generally offer returns. For a buyer who simply changes their mind, the seller’s return policy governs.

Mercari’s stated return guidance gives buyers generally 72 hours after confirmed delivery to report an eligible problem before the transaction completes. Eligible reasons include a significant mismatch with the listing, shipping damage, and inauthenticity. Fit, style, smell, and a change of mind generally do not qualify under that policy.
For either marketplace, protection is not a promise that every dispute will be decided in the buyer’s favor. Keep the listing, messages, packaging, and relevant delivery details, and use the platform’s prescribed order or help process. On Mercari, follow the instructions and return-label deadline if a return is approved.
Use the right return expectation for the item
Preference matters. If you are buying clothing and are unsure whether it will fit, or a décor item whose color or smell could disappoint you, do not assume that a platform’s protection will cover a change of mind. Read the seller’s return terms and make a decision you can live with if the item is accurately described but does not suit you.

What sellers should compare
Mercari’s fee structure depends on the listing’s terms
Mercari says listing is free. For a new or updated listing under the fee structure effective January 6, 2025, the seller fee is 10% of the item price plus buyer-paid shipping. Older listings may retain legacy fees until updated, so do not infer the applicable fee solely from when the listing was first created. Check the terms attached to the listing you plan to sell.
The fee base matters: buyer-paid shipping is included along with the item price. When estimating proceeds, do not calculate the percentage against the item price alone. Your net also depends on any costs you pay to package or ship the item and other applicable transaction terms.
eBay’s fees depend on category and setup
eBay describes an insertion fee and a final value fee. The final value fee depends on factors including category, listing format, optional upgrades, and seller circumstances. Its Seller Center states a category-dependent final value fee range of 2.5% to 15.3%, plus a per-order fee. It also describes a monthly allowance of up to 250 zero-insertion-fee listings, subject to terms and exceptions.
Those figures do not yield one universal eBay fee for a used item. The relevant category, seller account, listing configuration, optional services, and any applicable allowance all matter. Calculate the fee for the actual listing rather than applying the range’s lowest or highest number as if it were a quote.

Why the advertised percentages are not a complete comparison
Mercari’s stated 10% seller fee and eBay’s category-dependent final value fee are not a like-for-like comparison by themselves. eBay also describes insertion and per-order fees, and its fee depends on listing details. Mercari’s rate applies to item price plus buyer-paid shipping for qualifying new or updated listings, while older listings may have different terms.
To compare likely proceeds, use the price and shipping arrangement you intend to offer, identify the exact eBay category and listing setup, and check the fee schedule that applies to the Mercari listing. Include the costs you will actually pay, such as postage and packing materials, rather than treating the platform fee as the only expense. The available policy information does not establish a single price point or category where one platform will always leave sellers with more.
Shipping: cost, workflow, and who carries the risk
Mercari shipping protection is conditional
Mercari says eligible prepaid labels can qualify for shipping protection up to $200 for standard, economy, and Media Mail rates, and up to $20 for First-Class Envelope rates, provided the seller follows the applicable rules. These are coverage limits, not a promise that every loss or damage claim will be reimbursed up to that amount.

Before listing, verify the package dimensions, weight, carrier and service, label choice, and current terms. A label that is unsuitable for the package or a failure to follow the rules can affect eligibility.

Do not assume eBay has the same shipping terms
The eBay policy information reviewed establishes fee and buyer-protection points, but does not provide a complete, directly comparable label-rate or shipping-insurance schedule. It therefore cannot support a claim that eBay shipping will be cheaper or safer than Mercari’s for a particular parcel.
For an actual sale, compare the available carrier service and price for the package’s dimensions, weight, destination, and tracking needs, then check the relevant platform’s current coverage terms. A lower postage quote and a higher coverage limit are different benefits; decide which matters for the item’s value and delivery risk.

A practical way to decide before listing or buying
If you are buying
- Compare equivalent items. Check condition, included parts, photographs, seller description, and shipping terms. A lower listed price is not a better deal if the item or delivery terms are materially different.
- Calculate the checkout total. On Mercari, account for the 3.6% Buyer Protection fee on item price plus buyer-paid shipping where the new or updated listing terms apply. For either marketplace, use the actual checkout amount, including displayed shipping and applicable taxes or charges.
- Match the return rules to your risk. If the concern is a missing, damaged, or inaccurately described item, review the platform’s claim process. If the concern is fit or a change of mind, check the seller’s return policy rather than relying on buyer-protection coverage.
- Check the deadline and process. Mercari’s stated window for eligible issues is generally 72 hours after confirmed delivery. Use the order’s help flow promptly and follow any instructions if a return is approved. On eBay, review the current Money Back Guarantee terms for an eligible problem.
If you are selling
- Set the true transaction details. Decide the item price, shipping arrangement, category, listing format, and any optional upgrades before estimating your take-home amount.
- Calculate the platform fee for that setup. For qualifying new or updated Mercari listings, apply the stated 10% to item price plus buyer-paid shipping. For eBay, use the exact category and seller setup to determine insertion, final value, per-order, and optional fees.
- Price shipping for the actual package. Check dimensions, weight, destination, service, and tracking. If you plan to rely on Mercari Shipping Protection, use an eligible Mercari label and comply with its current terms.
- Make the listing easy to assess. Describe condition and disclose defects accurately; use clear images of the item and relevant details. This helps buyers decide and reduces avoidable disagreement, though it does not replace platform protections.
- Plan for a claim or return. Understand the applicable deadlines, what reasons qualify, and who may have to pay return shipping. Keep communications and shipping records available through the transaction.
Which marketplace is better for used goods?
Choose based on the transaction rather than expecting one site to win every category. Mercari’s stated fees make the buyer-side charge and seller-side percentage relatively explicit for qualifying new or updated listings, while its seller proceeds and buyer total still depend on shipping, listing terms, and other costs. Its short post-delivery reporting period and exclusions for preference-based returns are important if you are buying.
