DraftKings announced on May 6, 2013, that it had closed a $7 million Series A round led by Atlas Venture. The company said it would use the money to improve its daily fantasy-sports service and expand marketing and distribution across web and mobile. This is a historical financing announcement, not a description of DraftKings’ current products or availability.

Why DraftKings raised $7 million

DraftKings said the financing would fund product and customer-experience development, along with marketing for its web and mobile daily fantasy-sports offerings. CEO Jason Robins described the intended priorities as building out the user experience and expanding marketing and distribution. GamesBeat reported Robins’ comments when the round was announced.

The company had launched about a year earlier. VC News Daily’s archived announcement gives its launch date as April 28, 2012. The funding was intended to help the Boston company develop and promote its short-duration fantasy-sports product.

What the 2013 service offered

Contemporary reports described contests in which users assembled fantasy teams around professional sports, with same-day or short-duration play. The descriptions are specific to the service at the time and should not be taken as current product or legal guidance.

  • The Next Web listed professional football, basketball, hockey and baseball, along with college basketball and college football. Its May 6, 2013 report also said the company planned to award more than $20 million in fantasy-baseball cash prizes during 2013. That was a planned amount, not a verified total paid.
  • GamesBeat described real-money contests on the web and social or mobile app versions using virtual currency, and reported contests covering baseball, football, basketball and hockey.

What contemporaneous reports said about traction

Published user counts did not agree. The Next Web reported more than 1 million users across web and mobile, while GamesBeat reported more than 100,000 registered players. Neither report explains whether the figures refer to different populations or dates, so they cannot be reconciled from the available reporting.

GamesBeat also reported that DraftKings had 18 employees and had hosted more than 500,000 matches in the prior year. These are outlet-reported figures from 2013, not independently audited metrics.

What the announcement establishes—and what it does not

The reported financing terms establish a $7 million Series A led by Atlas Venture and the company’s stated plans for the proceeds. The reviewed accounts do not provide a company valuation, so one should not be inferred from the round size. The announcement is evidence of a financing event and the business’s stated plans in 2013; it does not establish DraftKings’ present-day product lineup, operating metrics, or availability.

The Next Web’s contemporaneous report, GamesBeat’s report, and VC News Daily’s archived announcement provide the reported funding details and period context.
