President Jim Tyo said the name still resonated with Canadian customers and employees, and he tied the change to a renewed focus on gaming communities, in-store events, collectibles and store experiences. That is the company’s stated positioning—not evidence that every product is Canadian-made or that the rebrand has produced measured business gains.
What changed, and when?
On May 5, 2025, GameStop Canada announced that entrepreneur Stephan Tetrault had acquired Electronics Boutique Canada Inc., also known as GameStop Canada, from GameStop Global Holdings S.à r.l. The company said it would relaunch as EB Games Canada. The acquisition announcement described a renewed focus on customer experience, collector culture, Canadian gamers, events and expanded product lines.
In a May 7, 2025 interview with MobileSyrup, Tyo traced the name’s history: Electronics Boutique began in 1993, the company used that name for five years, and it had been known as EB Games since 1998. The Canadian business retained the EB Games name after GameStop purchased it in 2006, then changed to GameStop branding in 2021. The 2025 return therefore restored a familiar Canadian retail name after four years of GameStop branding.
Why did EB Games Canada bring back the name?
Tyo said customers and employees continued to identify with EB Games, which he described as an iconic name with recognition and loyalty. He said the 2021 switch to GameStop branding followed global corporate timing, while the acquisition offered a chance to begin a new chapter under new ownership. In his words, “as we turn a new page, and EB Games is recognized as a Canadian brand and Canadian retailer, the timing just seemed right to step back and get to our roots again.”

Those are Tyo’s reasons for the decision, not results from an independent survey. The interview does not quantify customer recognition or establish how the rebrand affected sales. Tetrault similarly framed the acquisition as a return to something Canadians loved, while the announcement presented a stronger Canadian focus as a goal. The name and ownership changed; the public statements do not show that every operation changed or that goods sold by the retailer are made in Canada.
What did “returning to roots” mean for the business?
More events and community activity
Tyo described plans for midnight game launches and more trading-card events. Toys and collectibles, he said, could provide additional release occasions and ways to bring fans into stores. The acquisition announcement also set out an ambition for EB Games to be a hub for gaming and fandom culture; that is an aspiration rather than a measured outcome.

In September 2025, MobileSyrup reported on initiatives EB Games had teased, including trading-card programming, video-game activations, loyalty benefits, store renovations and a Montreal flagship plan. These were reported as plans, not proof that each project was completed.
A broader mix of toys and collectibles
Tyo said the company intended to expand toys and collectibles while remaining focused on video games. He said Tetrault’s experience in those categories could help open doors with vendors. In the 2025 interview, Tyo expected the toys-and-collectibles business to reach $100 million that year and described it as the company’s fastest-growing segment, at more than 30 percent growth. These are his estimates; the interview provides no audited revenue figure, calculation method or independent confirmation.

More experiential stores, with technology investment
Tyo said the owner wanted more experiential sections in stores and technology investment over time. A later example was reported on October 6, 2026: MobileSyrup said a 1,500-square-foot Nintendo store-within-a-store was scheduled to open at the Toronto flagship, 267 Yonge Street, on October 17. The planned space was to feature Switch 2 hardware and software, playable demos, merchandise and photo opportunities. Because the reported opening date was still in the future on October 8, 2026, the opening itself is not confirmed here. Read MobileSyrup’s report.
Reservations and ship-from-store ideas
Tyo described reservations as a way for the retailer to gauge customer appetite for a title and its price before making a decision. That is his account of the retailer’s model, not independent evidence that reservations reliably predict demand.

He also said EB Games was exploring technology to use stores as local inventory points, potentially helping customers access varied used-game stock. In the interview, this was an exploration rather than a launched ship-from-store service. Tyo said the company had 185 stores at the time; the acquisition announcement separately described it as having more than 185. Those are 2025 figures, not a verified current store count.
Retro games remained a possibility, not a settled expansion
Tyo said EB Games might revisit retro games, but earlier tests had been difficult because enough demand was concentrated in particular locations. The 2025 interview does not establish a confirmed retro-gaming rollout. The later report on teased plans mentioned a possible trade-in expansion that could include cards and retro games, but it likewise described plans rather than completed changes.

How the Canadian positioning extended beyond stores
In January 2026, Canadian Soccer Business announced a multi-year partnership with EB Games Canada supporting Canada Soccer and the Canadian Premier League. It offers a concrete example of the retailer’s community positioning beyond store events, but the announcement alone does not establish the partnership’s impact. See the partnership announcement.
What the rebrand does—and does not—tell customers
The return to EB Games signals a change in brand identity after the 2025 acquisition and reflects the rationale Tyo gave for restoring a name he said Canadians and staff recognized. The company paired that message with goals involving events, product mix, technology and store experiences. Some initiatives were only teased or under exploration; the Toronto Nintendo space was reported as scheduled to open on a future date as of October 8, 2026.
The available announcements do not demonstrate that the rebrand increased loyalty or revenue, that all planned initiatives happened, or that the company’s products are Canadian-made. Readers can distinguish the identity change from its business results: the former is documented, while the latter would require evidence beyond the stated plans and expectations.
