Stoke City dismissed head coach Steven Schumacher on 16 September 2024, after a 1–0 defeat at Oxford United. BBC Sport reported that Stoke were 13th after five league matches, with two wins. On 3 October, Schumacher told the BBC EFL podcast 72+ that he had not received a full explanation. “I don’t understand and I still haven’t had a full explanation on why I lost my job,” he said. Who owned Stoke City at the time?
John Coates became Stoke’s outright owner after a demerger from bet365 implemented in August 2024. The club said it was debt free and owned its stadium and training ground. Coates said his family remained committed to Stoke and that investment in the playing squad would continue within competition rules. What do Stoke’s financial results show?
Published figures help explain the club’s financial context, but they do not by themselves prove that ownership was well or poorly managed. In particular, an accounting profit after a loan waiver is not the same as a recurring profit from football operations.

Is there a verified damning verdict on Stoke’s ownership?
Not in the reporting that establishes the events and figures above. The alleged EFL expert is not identified, and no damning verdict tied specifically to the Schumacher decision is established. Maguire’s cited comment concerns Stoke’s losses since relegation, not the club’s ownership or the dismissal. It would be misleading to present it as the headline’s verdict.

There is also a different, earlier opinion: in April 2024, former Stoke manager Tony Pulis said, “Stoke have one of the best ownership groups in English football.” That is Pulis’s assessment, made before Schumacher’s dismissal, rather than a contemporaneous response to it. BBC Sport’s report quoting Pulis.

It does not establish that a named expert delivered the claimed ownership verdict after the decision.
