For U.S. industrial supplier discovery, start with Thomasnet; for global wholesale sourcing, Alibaba.com; and for custom-part quoting and production, consider Xometry or MFG. These services solve different problems, so the right choice depends on where the part will be made, how it is quoted, and what protections and supplier evidence you need. A platform’s domestic focus or supplier listing does not by itself prove that a specific order will be manufactured in the United States.
How the four platforms differ
| Platform | Best fit | How sourcing works | Geography and evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thomasnet | Finding and comparing industrial suppliers, products, and services | Search a directory, filter profiles, shortlist suppliers, then contact them directly or send quote requests. | Thomas describes its network as 500,000+ North American suppliers. Its Made in America page says it covers more than 500,000 U.S.-based suppliers and 80,000+ manufacturing products and services. These are platform-reported counts, not independent audits. Thomas and Made in America |
| Alibaba.com | Global wholesale sourcing, including customized products | Find products or sellers, contact them or submit an RFQ, negotiate, place an order, and arrange payment and shipping. | A global marketplace. Trade Assurance applies only to eligible orders that meet its current terms and order/payment requirements; it is not a general guarantee of supplier quality. Alibaba Buyer Central and Trade Assurance |
| Xometry | Digital quoting and on-demand manufacture of custom parts | Request a quote through a manufacturing platform covering multiple processes, materials, and volumes. | Xometry describes a U.S. and global supplier network and reports 5,000+ vetted suppliers. These are company claims, not independent audits. Confirm the producing facility for each job if domestic manufacture is required. Xometry and Partner network |
| MFG.com | RFQs for custom metal, plastic, and rubber parts | Submit an RFQ and compare quotes from manufacturers matched to location, capabilities, and certifications; the platform also describes electronic NDAs and quote/order workflows. | MFG describes a global marketplace. Specify domestic production and verify the matched supplier’s actual facility. MFG help center |
Counts and features above come from platform pages and are subject to change. The figures are not a like-for-like measure of marketplace size: Thomas reports North American and U.S. directory listings, while Xometry reports suppliers in a manufacturing network.
Which service should you use?
Use Thomasnet to build a supplier shortlist
Thomasnet is primarily a discovery and outreach tool, rather than a single online factory that will necessarily quote and produce your part. Thomas says buyers can filter by capabilities, certifications, and business type; compare up to five selected suppliers; send project details and files in a quote request; and contact up to 20 suppliers with the same brief. Treat those as platform-described workflow features, and verify supplier qualifications and production details directly.
Thomas’s Made in America page says its listing is part of an SBA-cosponsored activity, while also stating that it is not an official U.S. government website and that SBA participation does not imply endorsement. A directory entry or listed certification should not be treated as government approval or as proof that a particular order will be made domestically.

Alibaba.com supports seller discovery, direct discussion, RFQs, customization conversations, negotiation, ordering, payment, and shipping. It can suit a buyer comparing international suppliers or seeking a wholesale product, but a seller profile does not replace supplier qualification. Alibaba’s guidance recommends reviewing seller profiles and badges, asking questions, requesting samples, and putting detailed specifications into the purchase order.
#1 Best Overall
Use Xometry or MFG for custom-part quotes
Xometry focuses on digital quoting and on-demand manufacturing across processes, materials, and volumes. MFG focuses on RFQs for custom metal, plastic, and rubber parts. These are more directly oriented to getting custom parts quoted and produced than a broad industrial directory. Neither platform’s general description establishes where a particular job will be made: state the required country and confirm the actual production site in writing.
How to compare quotes fairly
Send the same complete RFQ to every candidate. A low unit price is not comparable if it omits tooling, finishing, inspection, freight, or a different delivery scope.
- Attach the same drawing and specification, and state material, manufacturing process, tolerances, and acceptance criteria.
- Request prices at the same quantity breaks and include expected annual volume where relevant.
- Ask for tooling or non-recurring engineering charges, setup, finishing, inspection, packaging, and delivery costs as separate line items.
- Specify destination and delivery terms. For international sourcing, account for freight, duties, and taxes when comparing landed cost.
- State quality and certification requirements, required delivery date, and how parts will be inspected or accepted.
- Ask which facility will make the parts and whether the respondent is the manufacturer, a broker, or a distributor.
Compare written quotes on the same scope, not just headline unit prices. If a supplier proposes a different process, material, tolerance, or delivery assumption, resolve that difference before ranking the quotes.

Before committing to production, confirm that the supplier can meet the required process, capacity, tolerances, and schedule. Depending on the part and risk, ask for references, a sample, evidence of relevant certifications, quality controls, and an inspection plan. Verify certifications with the issuing body when that matters to the purchase. Put confidentiality and intellectual-property requirements in writing before sharing sensitive drawings.

For Alibaba orders using Trade Assurance, check whether the order is eligible and read the current terms before relying on protection. Alibaba says the protection relates to quality and shipment terms agreed in an eligible order, and that the order and payment must follow its requirements. Write measurable specifications and dates into the online order, keep relevant communications on-platform, and use a qualifying payment route. This protection is not a substitute for vetting a supplier, and terms can change.

A practical sourcing sequence
- Define the job. Assemble the drawing or specification, material, process, tolerances, quantity breaks, forecast, delivery target, quality requirements, packaging, destination, and acceptance method.
- Choose the sourcing model. Use Thomasnet to discover and contact industrial suppliers; Alibaba.com to source wholesale products globally; or Xometry and MFG to seek custom-part quotes through a digital manufacturing or RFQ workflow.
- Screen for the actual production location. Tell candidates any country-of-origin requirement and ask for the facility that will produce the order. Do not infer production location from a platform’s headquarters, branding, or domestic-facing page.
- Collect comparable written quotes. Send the same brief and files, clarify any differences in scope, and compare the full cost and delivery assumptions.
- Validate before production. Check capability and relevant credentials, request a sample or inspection plan as appropriate, and put specifications, schedule, delivery, acceptance criteria, and remedies in the purchase documents.
