The often-repeated claim that Valve earns nearly $50 million per employee is an estimate, not a figure Valve has reported in audited financial statements. It depends on third-party estimates of Steam sales and an assumed workforce of about 350 people. Those inputs do not establish Valve’s actual revenue per employee, and they do not prove that Valve out-earns major technology companies on a like-for-like basis.
How much does Valve make per employee?
There is no verified, current figure. Valve is privately held, and the sources available do not provide audited company revenue alongside a current, dated employee count. A 2025 estimate discussed by Tom’s Hardware puts Steam revenue at about $16.2 billion and the company estimate at about $17 billion. These are estimates, not Valve filings; the headline ratio uses an assumed workforce of roughly 350.
The basic calculation is company revenue divided by employee count. Using an estimated company-wide revenue of about $17 billion and an assumed 350 employees gives roughly $49 million per employee. That arithmetic is straightforward; the inputs and what “revenue” means are not confirmed. The resulting figure should be described as an estimate built from estimates, not as Valve’s reported earnings per employee.
Why Steam sales are not the same as Valve revenue
Steam is a marketplace and distribution platform used by thousands of creators and publishers, as Valve explains on its Steam platform page. The total customers spend on games through Steam is not automatically revenue retained by Valve: publishers and developers receive proceeds, while Valve retains commissions and also earns money from its own products. Marketplace gross sales, Valve’s commission revenue, total company revenue, and operating profit are distinct measures.

- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
That distinction matters because the near-$50-million ratio is often framed as though every dollar spent on Steam belongs to Valve. A marketplace-sales estimate cannot be divided by Valve’s employee count and labeled company revenue per employee unless it first accounts for the portion that goes to creators and publishers.
What the reported 2021 figures do—and do not—show
A 2025 PC Gamer report described purported figures from a court document: about $2 billion in Steam commission revenue in 2021 and an operating margin just under 60%. Applying that margin to the reported commission revenue implies about $1.2 billion in operating profit. That profit figure is a calculation from the reported numbers, not a directly verified company statement.

PC Gamer noted that the underlying filing was removed and could not be independently checked against the original document. These figures are therefore secondary reporting about purported court-document information, not audited financial statements. They offer a different view of Steam’s economics from gross marketplace spending, but they do not establish Valve’s current revenue or per-employee figure.
What is known about Valve’s workforce?
Valve’s official company page says it has over 300 artists, programmers, and writers. It does not give a dated workforce snapshot, so that description should not be treated as an exact current headcount.
Rank #3
Historical reporting based on court documents placed Valve at 336 employees in 2021, as reported by The Verge. That is a dated historical count, not evidence that Valve still has 336 employees—or approximately 350—today. The 2025 estimate’s assumed workforce and the reported 2021 count are not interchangeable.
Why Valve can operate with a relatively small workforce
Valve combines a digital distribution platform with games and consumer hardware. Steam distributes products for outside creators as well as Valve’s own releases, while its official hardware portfolio includes Steam Deck, Valve Index, Steam Controller, and Steam Link (Valve hardware). Digital distribution can serve many customers without requiring a storefront workforce proportional to sales, but the available official sources do not provide a revenue breakdown that would show how much each business contributes.

Valve’s own Handbook for New Employees says: “Our profitability per employee is higher than that of Google or Amazon or Microsoft, and we believe strongly that the right thing to do in that case is to put a maximum amount of money back into each employee’s pocket.” This is Valve’s stated belief, not an independently audited comparison. It also does not substantiate the viral near-$50-million ratio or specify a matching year and accounting definition for the comparison.

Not on the evidence behind the headline. A fair comparison would need the same year, revenue definition, employee-count scope, and company-wide or platform-only boundary for every company. It would also need to distinguish revenue from operating profit and net income. The sources cited here do not provide a verified, aligned set of figures for Valve and companies such as Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Apple, or Meta.

So the strongest defensible conclusion is narrower: estimates suggest Steam and Valve may generate unusually large economic activity relative to a small workforce, and Valve itself claims high profitability per employee. But the near-$50-million figure is not an audited Valve metric, and the available evidence does not establish an apples-to-apples ranking against technology giants.
