PayPal can currently be used for Steam purchases charged in euros (EUR), Canadian dollars (CAD), British pounds (GBP), Japanese yen (JPY), Australian dollars (AUD) or US dollars (USD). Valve says PayPal is unavailable for purchases in other currencies after PayPal’s acquiring bank stopped processing Steam transactions in certain currencies in early July 2025. Valve hopes to restore the option, but has not given a timeline.
Which currencies still work with PayPal on Steam?
Valve’s Steam Support notice names six currencies for PayPal purchases:

This is a limit on PayPal checkout by transaction currency, not a list of six countries where PayPal is permitted. Steam supports many customer currencies beyond these six; the restriction described by Valve applies specifically to paying with PayPal.
Why is PayPal unavailable for some Steam purchases?
Valve says PayPal notified it in early July 2025 that PayPal’s acquiring bank was immediately ending processing for Steam-related transactions in certain currencies. Valve’s notice does not name the bank or explain its decision. It does not establish a broader reason for the interruption.

Valve says, “We hope to offer PayPal as an option for these currencies in the future but the timeline is uncertain.” It is also “evaluating adding additional payment methods on Steam for the customers affected by this.” That is an evaluation, not an announcement that a specific new method will arrive.
Does your country determine whether PayPal will appear?
Not by itself. The relevant detail is the currency Steam uses for the purchase. Steamworks documentation explains that where Steam does not support a country’s native currency, it generally presents and charges prices in US dollars; in European countries, it uses euros. As a result, a customer’s local currency and the currency charged by Steam may differ. Check the currency shown at checkout and whether PayPal is offered for that transaction rather than assuming availability from your country alone.
What can you do if PayPal is missing?
- Check the checkout screen for another payment method. Valve advises customers to use an alternative available for their purchase. Options vary by location, so rely on the methods shown at your own checkout rather than expecting a particular one.
- Consider a Steam Wallet code if none of the displayed methods works for you. Valve lists this as a possible way to add funds. Check that a code is available and compatible with your region and Steam Wallet currency before buying one.
A code is a fallback, not a guaranteed solution for every account or region. Use a legitimate seller and confirm compatibility before paying.

Is a currency-mismatch error the same problem?
No. Valve’s PayPal restriction concerns PayPal processing in certain purchase currencies. Separately, Steam Support says a currency-mismatch error can occur when a traveler combines Steam Wallet funds with a payment instrument.
