In the United States, UPS may leave a package at your door or another designated spot when the shipment allows it and delivery instructions permit it. A door drop is not guaranteed: a signature requirement, shipper restriction, or the driver’s assessment of the delivery location can mean someone must accept the package or you need to arrange another option. Check UPS tracking for the choices available for your specific shipment.
Can you tell UPS where to leave a package?
For eligible shipments, UPS My Choice or an option on the tracking page may let you set a preferred drop location or authorize release. The available choices depend on the shipment, destination, and applicable requirements. A preference does not override a shipper’s restrictions or every delivery condition.
UPS describes “Leave at Location” as a recipient-selected place where a driver may leave a shipment when the service is available. UPS’s terms say this option may be unavailable if the shipper requires an adult signature or excludes it. They also state that recipients accept responsibility for loss or damage after release according to their instructions. That is UPS’s stated term, not a determination of how it applies in every legal situation.
When will UPS not leave a package?
- Signature Required: UPS says it will not leave the package without a signature unless you submitted an approved release before delivery. See UPS’s guidance on signature-required deliveries.
- Adult Signature Required: An adult at least 21 years old must accept the shipment and show valid identification. UPS says these packages cannot be released digitally.
- Shipper or shipment restrictions: The shipper may require a physical signature or limit release options. Regulated or identity-verified deliveries may have additional requirements.
- No safe place to leave it: Even if you authorized release, the driver may require a signature if the spot or conditions present a risk of loss or damage.
What happens if you’re not home?
If UPS cannot complete delivery, it may leave an InfoNotice with next steps. Check tracking for the package’s status, location, and any actions available for that shipment. Depending on eligibility, options may include rescheduling, redirecting to a pickup location, or changing the delivery location.

UPS says a package taken to a nearby UPS Access Point for pickup is held for seven calendar days; if it is not collected during that period, UPS returns it to the sender. Confirm in tracking that the package is awaiting pickup and check the location details before you go.
How to choose a delivery option

A lockable parcel box can be a practical place to request for eligible unattended deliveries, but UPS does not guarantee a driver will use it. Shipment restrictions and the driver’s assessment still apply.

What to do if tracking says “delivered” but the package is missing
- Review the tracking details and any delivery photo or location information provided for the shipment.
- Check the designated delivery spot and nearby areas where a package may have been placed.
- Contact the shipper or UPS through its current support process. The available guidance does not establish a universal claims outcome or guarantee reimbursement.
Steps to set delivery instructions
- Open UPS tracking for the package and review its status and available actions.
- If offered, use UPS My Choice or the tracking-page release option to provide instructions for that shipment.
- Check for signature requirements or shipper restrictions before relying on an unattended drop.
- If release is unavailable or the location is not suitable, select a delivery change or pickup option if one is offered.
