No. The Social Security Administration (SSA) generally does not email your Social Security Statement. It sends an annual reminder—usually about three months before your birthday—to review the Statement in your my Social Security account. Treat an unsolicited email claiming your Statement is ready to download as suspicious.
What Social Security emails—and what it does not
SSA distinguishes between an email reminder, an account alert, and the Statement itself. Its annual email reminder asks you to review the Statement online; SSA says the reminder contains no personal information. The Statement is accessed through your my Social Security account, not delivered as an email attachment or download link. SSA’s email FAQ and Statement page explain the online service.

SSA lets account holders choose available online notices instead of mail and request email or text alerts. The alert settings may allow email, text, both, or neither; the Statement remains available online even if you choose paper notices. SSA’s opt-out guidance describes the secure Message Center, and its policy manual explains alert choices.
How to get your Statement
View it online
Create or sign in to an official my Social Security account to see your Statement. SSA says people living overseas can access online Statements for domestic earnings using an ID.me account. Use the official SSA site rather than a link in an unsolicited message.

Request or receive a paper copy
SSA currently mails Statements about three months before a birthday to workers age 60 and older who do not have an online account. If you want a paper Statement, you can request one with Form SSA-7004; SSA says a requested copy should arrive in four to six weeks. The age-based automatic mailing and the form request are separate routes, so the automatic mailing rule does not mean every worker receives a paper copy.
How to check an email claiming your Statement is ready
SSA’s Office of the Inspector General warned on February 19, 2026, about a surge in fraudulent emails pretending to provide access to Social Security Statements. Common red flags include a claim that the Statement is ready to download, a link or attachment labeled as a Statement or document, pressure to act quickly, or a sender address that does not end in .gov. Logos and display names can be copied, so they are not proof that a message is genuine. Read the OIG alert.

- Do not click, open, reply, or enter personal information. SSA account help likewise advises people who are unsure about an email not to respond or follow its links. SSA account security guidance lists legitimate SSA website domains, including ssa.gov and secure.ssa.gov.
- Navigate to SSA yourself. Type ssa.gov/myaccount into your browser, then sign in to check your Statement or Message Center.
- Report the suspicious message. Follow the reporting instructions in the February 2026 OIG alert. SSA OIG’s April 1, 2025 alert also advises against clicking a download link, replying, or providing information. If you clicked, downloaded an attachment, or shared personal information, use the victim guidance in the relevant OIG alert and contact your financial institution or the appropriate reporting channel.
A .gov sender address is a useful warning-check, not a reason to trust a message solely on appearance. The safest test is to reach SSA independently through its official website and look for the document or notice in your account.
