No—not on a US PayPal Balance Account. PayPal’s terms say the account has “No overdraft/credit feature.” A balance can still turn negative after a bank payment is returned or a transaction is reversed, but that is an amount to resolve—not overdraft credit from PayPal. Terms may differ outside the United States.
Why can my PayPal balance go negative?
A negative balance can appear when a payment or credit previously applied to your account is later reversed. PayPal lists several possible causes:

- A returned bank payment: An instant bank payment may appear to go through before it clears. PayPal says clearing can take 2–5 business days; if the bank returns the payment, your PayPal balance could become negative. Possible reasons include insufficient funds, a closed bank account, or incorrect bank details. PayPal’s explanation of returned bank payments.
- A dispute or chargeback: A payment may be reversed when a buyer opens a dispute or their card issuer files a chargeback.
- A refund or other payment reversal: A refund or a reversal of a payment not covered by Seller Protection may leave an amount owed.
- Unauthorized activity: An unauthorized transaction can also affect your balance. PayPal recommends reporting suspected unauthorized activity through the Resolution Center.
To identify what happened, review your recent transactions in PayPal’s Activity. PayPal’s help page on negative balances lists these causes and explains possible account effects.
How do I resolve a negative PayPal balance?
- Sign in to PayPal and check Activity. Look for the returned payment, dispute, refund, or reversal that changed your balance.
- Follow the account prompt. For a returned bank payment, PayPal directs users to log in and select “Resolve Negative Balance.” Follow the available options to bring the balance to zero; ways to add funds can vary by account and location.
- Check your bank details if a payment was returned. Confirm that the linked account is open, its details are correct, and it had sufficient funds. PayPal says a returned payment may also result in a bank fee or use of a backup payment method.
- Report activity you do not recognize. Use PayPal’s Resolution Center if you believe a transaction was unauthorized.
If a bank payment was declined and you still need to make a purchase, PayPal suggests trying another payment method or adding money to your balance. You can manage payment methods in Wallet. A declined payment does not, by itself, establish that your PayPal balance is negative. See PayPal’s guidance on declined bank payments.

What happens if I leave the balance unpaid?
PayPal says payments you receive may be applied to the amount you owe. If a negative balance remains unresolved for 120 days, your account may be locked or limited; PayPal also says an extended unpaid balance may be sent to collections. These are possibilities PayPal describes, not guaranteed outcomes for every account. See PayPal’s negative-balance guidance.
