That share does not, by itself, show that Lido controls the same proportion of validators or can dictate Ethereum’s governance or consensus.
What Lido’s share of staked ETH does—and does not—show
Lido is a staking protocol. The share figures below compare the amount of ETH attributed to staking providers with all staked ETH. They show scale, not a direct measure of who operates validators, which software clients those validators use, or how much influence any provider has over Ethereum governance.
In its H1 2026 report, Lido DAO reported the following market-position figures. They are protocol-reported snapshots dated June 30, 2026, not live figures for October 2026 or independent measurements.
| Measure | Reported figure | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Lido share of all staked ETH at the start of 2026 | 23.93% | Lido DAO’s reported starting-period share. |
| Lido share of all staked ETH on June 30, 2026 | 21.18% | Lido DAO’s reported period-end share, lower than its starting-period figure. |
| Lido protocol TVL at the start of H1 2026 | 8.74 million ETH | Lido DAO’s ETH-denominated protocol TVL figure. |
| Lido protocol TVL on June 30, 2026 | 9.13 million ETH | Lido DAO’s ETH-denominated protocol TVL figure, higher than at the start of H1. |
A declining share can coexist with a rise in the amount of ETH held in a protocol: the overall staking pool can grow faster than the provider’s stake. The report’s two measures therefore tell different stories—Lido’s ETH-denominated TVL increased over H1, while its reported portion of all staked ETH decreased.

How Lido compared with other providers in the same snapshot
Lido DAO’s report also compared provider shares of all staked ETH on June 30, 2026:
| Provider | Share of all staked ETH reported by Lido DAO |
|---|---|
| Lido | 21.2% |
| Bitmine | 11.5% |
| Coinbase | 10.9% |
| Binance | 7.9% |
These are provider-share figures from the same date and denominator, making them more useful for comparison than figures drawn from different periods or definitions. They still do not establish how many independent node operators participate in each provider, the diversity of their validator clients, or their governance influence. Lido DAO is the source of the comparison; the exact figures have not been independently corroborated here.

Why concentration can matter even without proof of control
When a large amount of stake is associated with one provider, risks can become correlated: a serious operational problem, a shared vulnerability, or a governance failure could affect more stake than a comparable problem at a smaller provider. This is a reason to scrutinize concentration and resilience, not evidence that such a failure has happened or that Lido alone can cause one.
Several distinct questions are often blurred together when people ask whether Lido can “control Ethereum”:

- Provider share: How much ETH is attributed to a staking provider? Lido DAO’s reported June 30, 2026 figure addresses this question.
- Node-operator concentration: How many separate operators run the validators associated with a protocol, and how concentrated is that work? The reported provider share does not answer this.
- Validator-client diversity: Which consensus and execution software clients are in use, and how exposed are validators to a common software fault? The provider-share data does not measure this.
- Governance influence: How much influence a provider or its participants have over protocol decisions. A share of staked ETH is not by itself a measurement of governance power.
- Consensus effects: Whether a particular actor or coordinated group could affect finality or censorship. The sources cited here do not establish a current Lido-specific threshold or show that Lido can unilaterally cause either outcome.
Keeping those questions separate avoids turning a large market share into an unsupported claim of unilateral control. It also makes clear why a provider-share snapshot alone cannot settle every concern about Ethereum’s decentralization.
Risks Lido itself discloses
Lido’s Public Risk Disclosure, last updated February 20, 2026, identifies smart-contract, slashing, governance, and stToken market-price risks. Those are relevant to users and to the protocol’s wider risk profile, but they are not evidence that a particular loss or network incident has occurred.

Lido Help’s article dated June 24, 2026, notes that withdrawal restrictions can contribute to stTokens trading below the value of their underlying assets. This is a market-price risk: a token’s trading price can diverge from the value it represents, particularly when holders cannot readily withdraw or redeem as expected. It is distinct from a claim that Ethereum consensus itself has failed.

Lido DAO says Curated Module v2 secures about 90% of Lido Core stake and describes changes to operator economics and other design elements. That is a Lido-reported statistic about Lido Core, not about all Ethereum staking. It does not establish that Ethereum staking overall is decentralized, demonstrate the distribution of all Lido node operators, or resolve every concern raised by Lido’s scale.

What the SEC filing adds to the risk picture
A U.S. SEC filing published in 2026 discusses centralization concerns involving large staking providers and refers to Lido using qualified reported-or-believed language. It is a risk disclosure, not a fresh SEC measurement of Lido’s validator control. Read it as evidence that provider concentration is a recognized risk topic, not as proof that Lido has taken control of Ethereum or caused a consensus failure.
So, does Lido threaten Ethereum?
Lido’s scale presents a structural concentration concern: correlated operational, governance, or market risks deserve attention. But the best-supported conclusion is narrower than the headline’s strongest implication. Lido DAO’s reported share fell between the start of 2026 and June 30, 2026, and provider share alone does not establish validator control, governance dominance, or unilateral power over consensus. The available figures support monitoring concentration; they do not show that Lido has demonstrated the ability to control or disrupt Ethereum on its own.
