Does Lake Fishing in Wisconsin Require a License?

Wisconsin’s lake fishing license rule depends on age, not the type of water. Find out who needs a license, which options the DNR lists, and when stamps or special rules may apply.

Yes. In Wisconsin, residents and nonresidents age 16 or older need a fishing license to fish in a lake, just as they do elsewhere in the state. Children 15 and younger and people born before 1927 are generally exempt under Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) guidance. [Wisconsin DNR license guidance]

Who needs a Wisconsin fishing license?

The rule is based on age, not whether you are fishing in a lake, river, or other water. Wisconsin DNR says residents and nonresidents age 16 or older must buy a fishing license wherever they fish. The DNR stated this rule in its April 7, 2026, season announcement. [Wisconsin DNR, April 7, 2026]

  • Age 16 or older: A license is required, unless a specific DNR exemption applies.
  • Age 15 or younger: Generally license-exempt.
  • Born before 1927: Listed by the DNR as license-exempt.

Do not assume that another circumstance—such as student or military status—automatically removes the requirement. Check the DNR’s current licensing guidance for your situation.

Which license should you buy?

For a short visit, a day or multi-day license may cost less than an annual license. The DNR’s general license table, checked October 8, 2026, lists these common choices and prices. Confirm the current fee when purchasing, since prices may change. [Wisconsin DNR license options and fees]

Check whether a stamp is needed

A basic fishing license may not cover every species. Wisconsin lists Inland Trout and Great Lakes Salmon/Trout stamps separately. The DNR says its one-day license requires an additional stamp for premium species such as trout and salmon; check the applicable stamp and water-specific regulations before fishing. [Wisconsin DNR license guidance]

How long a one-day license lasts

A one-day license is valid until midnight on the selected day. The DNR says it can be upgraded to an annual license at a reduced price during the same license year; the amounts listed above are the additional cost for that upgrade. [Wisconsin DNR license options and fees]

How to buy a license

The DNR sells licenses through Go Wild, registered sales locations, and DNR Service Centers. For an online Go Wild purchase, the DNR says you need a valid driver’s license or Social Security number. [Wisconsin DNR license options and fees]

Check resident eligibility before paying

For resident pricing, the DNR requires a permanent Wisconsin residence for the 30 consecutive days immediately before purchase, along with intent to make Wisconsin your domicile. Owning property in Wisconsin alone does not establish residency. The DNR lists evidence such as voting, paying state income taxes, or holding a Wisconsin driver’s license or state ID. A nonresident younger than 18 with a Wisconsin-resident parent may buy at resident prices. Student and military eligibility can depend on the circumstances, so check directly with the DNR. Does Wisconsin have free fishing days?

The DNR waived fishing-license requirements and trout/salmon stamp requirements for its 2026 Free Fun Weekend, held June 6–7, 2026. That event has passed; it is not a continuing exemption. Check the DNR for the next announced dates. During the 2026 event, ordinary bag and length limits still applied under the 2026–2027 fishing regulations. [Wisconsin DNR Free Fun Weekend]

Other rules still apply on lakes

Having the required license does not by itself authorize every catch or fishing method. Follow the current Wisconsin regulations for the species and water you plan to fish, including bag and length limits and any applicable stamp requirement. The DNR directs anglers to its 2026–2027 hook-and-line and trout regulations. [Wisconsin DNR fishing regulations]
