Metro’s current plan disclosures list a $0 online device activation/change fee. Some plans list a $25-per-line fee for making the change in a store, while other disclosures do not state an in-store amount. Check the fee shown for your plan and account before you confirm the switch.
What Metro may charge to change a phone
Metro’s plan broadband-facts disclosures distinguish between online and in-store device changes. The Metro BYOD $25 UNL disclosure lists an online device activation/change fee of $0 and an in-store fee of $25 per line. A separate plan disclosure also lists the online fee as $0 but does not state an in-store fee. These published amounts are plan-specific, not a guarantee that every Metro account will be charged the same way. Check Metro’s plan disclosures and confirm the amount in MyAccount or with Metro before proceeding.
| Where you make the device change | Published device activation/change fee | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Online | $0 in the cited Metro plan disclosures | Confirm the amount shown for your plan and account. |
| In store | $25 per line in some cited plan disclosures; other cited disclosure does not state an amount | Ask the store or Metro to confirm the charge before the change. |
The device-change fee is separate from the price of a replacement phone, a physical SIM, your monthly plan, or optional features. Metro’s public guidance cited here does not establish that those costs are included in the activation/change fee.
Switching phones is different from transferring your number
If you are keeping your existing Metro line and number, you are changing the device on that line. Bringing a number over from another carrier is a port-in, which requires information from your current provider and has its own timing requirements. Metro’s switching guidance covers the transfer process.

How to change phones on an existing Metro line
- Check the replacement phone. A bring-your-own device must be unlocked and compatible with Metro’s network. Use Metro’s compatibility checker with the specific phone or IMEI before buying or activating it.
- Check the SIM option. Metro says activation requires a Metro SIM or an eSIM-capable device. You may be able to move a physical SIM if its size and the phones support it. For an eSIM-compatible device on an existing account, Metro directs customers to the “Switch Device” flow in MyAccount. See Metro device and eSIM support.
- Start the device change online or get help. Use MyAccount for self-service, or contact Metro customer care or visit a Metro store if you need assistance. Review the fee displayed for your plan and channel before confirming; some plan disclosures list a $25-per-line in-store charge.
If you are transferring a number from another carrier
Have the number you want to transfer, your current provider’s name, account number, port-out PIN or password, and billing ZIP code ready. Do not cancel the old service first: Metro advises keeping it active until the number is fully activated on the Metro account. Review Metro’s number-transfer instructions before starting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to verify before confirming
- The device-change fee shown for your specific plan and whether you are completing the change online or in a store.
- That the exact phone model or IMEI is compatible and the phone is unlocked.
- Whether your phone will use a physical SIM or eSIM and whether your device supports that option.
- Whether you are changing a phone on an existing Metro line or transferring a number from another carrier.
Metro’s fees and device guidance can change, and public disclosures do not resolve whether a particular promotion, line, or handset changes the charge. Verify the amount in your account flow or with Metro before making the change.
