Re:

Does Game Pass Devalue Games? What the Revenge of the Savage Planet Director Said

Alex Hutchinson says day-one subscriptions may reduce willingness to pay, but his comments about Revenge of the Savage Planet are a studio perspective, not proof of an industry-wide effect.

Alex Hutchinson, creative director at Raccoon Logic, argued in a June 2025 interview that putting new games on subscription services at launch can weaken players’ willingness to pay. He proposed waiting a year before adding games to services such as Game Pass. That is his view, not proof that subscriptions cause industry-wide declines in sales or game production.

What Hutchinson said about Game Pass and game value

In a June 9, 2025 interview with Gamer Social Club, Hutchinson said, “What we’ve seen is that content has been devalued and that people are less willing to pay for things.” He warned that, in his view, this could eventually mean fewer games being made and more studios closing.

He also said, “Personally, I think the whole industry should agree to only allow games on subscription services a year after release.” He compared that proposed delay with release windows in film and television, where different ways to watch a title arrive at different times. It was a recommendation, not an existing industry rule.

The claim concerns the possible effect of subscription access on consumer expectations and paid purchases. The interview offers Hutchinson’s account and opinion; it does not establish that Game Pass has caused a broad decline in game sales, prices, or studio survival.

Why his own game makes the argument complicated

Revenge of the Savage Planet launched on Xbox Game Pass on May 8, 2025. Microsoft’s Xbox Wire launch announcement confirmed that Game Pass members would receive the Standard Edition on that date. The evidence confirms launch access, not whether the game remains in the catalog now.

Raccoon Logic also released the game for sale beyond Xbox. GameSpot’s June 10, 2025 report describes availability on PlayStation and PC as well. Game Pass inclusion therefore did not mean every platform version was included in the subscription.

The hoped-for sales spillover

Hutchinson said the studio accepted the Game Pass launch hoping that the exposure would lead subscribers to buy the game’s add-on pack or persuade friends on other platforms to purchase the game so they could play together. He said they had not seen that result “or at least not yet.”

At the same time, he said most of the game’s traffic had come through Game Pass and described sales as good. Gamer Social Club’s interview reported that the game had passed one million players after a few weeks, but that figure counts players, not copies sold. These are Hutchinson’s statements, not audited sales figures, and they do not show that Game Pass alone determined the game’s commercial performance.

What the subscription deal does—and does not—tell us

A subscription launch can offer access to a large pool of players, while a sale on a platform outside the service remains a separate way to reach customers. Hutchinson’s account illustrates the tension: Raccoon Logic saw substantial Game Pass traffic, hoped some of that reach would convert into add-on or other-platform purchases, and had not seen the hoped-for conversion at the time of the interview.

The financial terms of Raccoon Logic’s deal have not been disclosed in the cited reporting. GameSpot notes that deal terms are not public, so there is no reliable basis here to estimate the payment or compare it with the game’s sales revenue. Hutchinson said subscription checks had mattered more to developers years earlier and described Microsoft as a partner; his comments should not be treated as a disclosure of this deal’s value.

How to read the claim as a player or industry observer

  • Separate access from purchase behavior. A player milestone or high traffic does not by itself reveal how many people bought the game.
  • Distinguish an individual account from an industry-wide result. Hutchinson described what his studio had seen and argued for a policy change; the cited interview does not supply broad sales data proving subscriptions devalue games.
  • Keep timing in view. His proposed one-year wait would delay subscription access for new releases. It was his preferred model, not a current restriction on publishers.
  • Do not infer current availability from a launch announcement. Xbox Wire confirms Game Pass access at launch in May 2025, but does not establish the game’s present catalog status.

Why the game context matters

Revenge of the Savage Planet is a science-fiction co-op adventure from Raccoon Logic. In a January 9, 2025 PlayStation Blog post, the studio described exploration, scanning and cataloging, crafting and upgrades, four planets plus a secret fifth, and single-player, local split-screen, and online cross-play co-op. That context helps explain Hutchinson’s hope that subscribers might invite friends on other platforms to buy the game, but it does not independently validate his broader claim about subscription economics.
