The Rs800 billion figure is a reported estimate, not a verified measure of recoverable gold or government income. Former Punjab mines and minerals minister Ibrahim Hassan Murad was quoted making that valuation after a Geological Survey of Pakistan (GSP) study reportedly identified placer gold near the Indus River in Attock. A current provincial minister gave a lower estimate, and the study’s detailed findings were not made public in the cited coverage.
What was reportedly discovered in Attock?
The reports describe placer gold—gold found in river or stream deposits—near the confluence of the Kabul and Indus rivers in Attock, Punjab. HUM News reported that the GSP examined 127 samples, identified nine blocks and covered an area of 75 square kilometres. January 2025 coverage also attributed to Murad a claim of 2.8 million tolas of gold along a 32-kilometre stretch. These figures come from media accounts; the technical study itself was not reproduced in those reports.
Dawn reported in February 2025 that the study was titled “Potential Evaluation of Placer Gold on River Indus in District Attock” and had been prepared for Punjab’s Mines and Mineral Department. A GSP official confirmed that the study had been conducted and submitted to the department, but declined to discuss its findings because the report belonged to the department. Dawn’s account therefore confirms a study was submitted, not that its contents independently establish a particular quantity or value.
Why do the reported valuations differ?
Murad was reported to value the gold at Rs800 billion. Punjab mines minister Sher Ali Gorchani was quoted giving a world-market estimate of Rs600–700 billion and saying further valuation work was needed. The figures are separate attributed estimates, not two independently verified appraisals of recoverable reserves.

- COMPLETE GOLD PANNING KIT FOR ADULTS & BEGINNERS: Scoop paydirt with the 12" scoop, screen it through the 6" mini gold classifier, run it through the pocket sluice box, then finish in two patented spiral riffle gold pans. Everything for a first day on the creek, packed in one drawstring backpack.
- 12" POCKET SLUICE BOX WITH MINERS MOSS: A rubber riffle mat and miners moss trap heavy gold in a sluice small enough to carry anywhere. Use it to sample-test a gravel bar before hauling in big gear, clean up concentrates at home, or show kids how a sluice works.
- PATENTED SPIRAL RIFFLE GOLD PANS (US 12,582,996): Deep-walled 9" and 11" pans built like a classic prospector's pan, not a shallow dish. Aggressive riffles knock out light material fast, and the spiral riffles hold the fine flakes that flat-bottom pans wash away during finish panning.
- 35 LB RARE EARTH MAGNET, SNUFFER BOTTLE & MAGNIFIER TWEEZERS: The HUNTLEY sweeper wand's 35 lb rare earth magnet pulls black sand from your concentrates, the snuffer bottle vacuums gold flakes off the pan, and stainless magnifier tweezers let you spot and pick out flakes too small to grab by hand. Three glass gold vials hold the day's take.
- DESIGNED BY KEYESVILLE, CALIFORNIA PROSPECTORS: Sluice Fox kits are designed by prospectors who learned to pan in historic Keyesville, in California's Kern River gold country, and assembled in our own warehouses near the Sierra and Appalachian mountains. A gift that gets a family outdoors, from a brand that has been in the creek, not just a catalog.
| Reported figure | Attribution and date | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Rs800 billion | Former Punjab mines minister Ibrahim Hassan Murad, in January 2025 reporting | His reported valuation claim; not established as recoverable value, profit or public revenue |
| Rs600–700 billion | Punjab mines minister Sher Ali Gorchani, in January 2025 reporting | A reported world-market estimate, with further valuation work said to be needed |
| 2.8 million tolas | Attributed to Murad in January 2025 reporting | A reported quantity claim; the underlying technical report was not available in the cited coverage |
The different estimates should not be treated as a confirmed range for what a mine could earn. The cited coverage does not provide the technical data or economic assumptions needed to establish an economically recoverable resource, extraction costs, project profitability, or the share that might accrue to the government.
What is confirmed—and what remains unverified?
The evidence supports a narrower conclusion than the headline alone may suggest: provincial figures were reported about a placer-gold discovery, and a GSP study was submitted to Punjab’s Mines and Mineral Department. But the cited news accounts do not make the report’s detailed findings available for independent review. They also do not establish that the reported quantity is a formally classified reserve or that it can be mined profitably.

Gulf News reported on January 14, 2025 that Pakistan’s federal government and Foreign Office had not confirmed the reports at that time. That is a dated account of their position then, not evidence of their current position. Gulf News’s report should be read with that date in mind.
Does the discovery mean the government will receive Rs800 billion?
No such revenue figure is established by the reports. A headline valuation of gold in the ground is not the same as money earned from extraction. Establishing potential public revenue would require, among other things, a verified estimate of recoverable gold, a feasible mining plan, costs, applicable royalties or taxes, and the terms of any mining rights. The cited coverage does not supply those details.

Did Punjab auction the Attock mining rights?
January 2025 reporting described planned valuation work and an auction of mining rights. The sources cited here do not establish whether an auction later took place or what its outcome was. A plan reported at the time is not proof of a completed auction.
