No Sheffield Wednesday–Sheffield United merger was announced or completed. Sky Sports reported on 26 November 2025 that Wednesday’s administrators received an extraordinary email, said to purport to come from United owner COH Sports, asking about a possible merger. The account does not verify who sent it or establish a formal bid. It describes an enquiry during Wednesday’s administration sale process—not an unveiled, agreed plan.
What did the reported enquiry say?
Sky Sports said the email asked about the asking price and sought information on Hillsborough’s finances and assets. The report described the message as purporting to come from COH Sports, the company associated with Sheffield United’s ownership; it did not establish its authorship.
Sky Sports reported that the asking price was believed to exceed £30 million. That was a qualified figure in its reporting, not an official price statement. The available account does not say that COH Sports submitted a formal offer, agreed terms or committed to combining the clubs.
Why was Wednesday being sold?
The enquiry was reported while Sheffield Wednesday was in administration and being sold. Sky Sports said former owner Dejphon Chansiri had put the club into administration. In that context, an approach seeking information about the club’s price, finances and assets was part of a sale-related story—but it did not itself amount to a takeover bid or merger agreement.

Was this the same as Wednesday bidders joining forces?
No. BBC Sport’s 6 December 2025 analysis concerned reports that two prospective buyer groups might join forces to buy Sheffield Wednesday. It discussed the investment needed for Hillsborough and the training ground. That is a possible arrangement between buyers; it is not evidence that Wednesday and United would merge.
| Question | Reported enquiry about a club merger | Prospective buyers joining forces |
|---|---|---|
| Who would combine? | Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United, if a merger were pursued. | Two groups considering a joint effort to buy Wednesday. |
| What would change? | The clubs themselves could potentially be combined; no structure or terms were established in the reporting. | The buyer arrangement could change; the reports did not establish that the clubs would combine. |
| What evidence was reported? | Sky Sports described an email enquiry purporting to come from COH Sports; LBC also reported that an enquiry had been made and was quickly dismissed. Neither account establishes an agreed transaction. | BBC Sport analysed reports of prospective buyers joining forces and the investment needs facing Wednesday; it did not report a Wednesday–United merger. |
Was the reported merger plan unveiled or completed?
The available reporting supports neither description. Sky Sports reported an extraordinary enquiry about a possible merger, and LBC reported that the enquiry was quickly dismissed. Those accounts do not verify the message’s sender, establish a formal bid, or show that either club agreed to a merger.
