No—not simply because Windows 10 support ended. Microsoft says Windows 10 PCs continue to work, but standard free software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on October 14, 2025. If your computer meets Windows 11 requirements, upgrading may let you avoid buying a replacement. A new PC is one option for an older computer that cannot run Windows 11, not a blanket instruction to all Windows users.
Did Microsoft tell nearly half a billion Windows users to buy a PC?
No verified Microsoft figure supports that claim. The number appears to conflate different estimates and populations. Microsoft said in June 2025 that Windows ran on more than 1.4 billion monthly active devices; that figure covers Windows devices generally and is not a count of Windows 10 users told to buy a computer. A December 2025 TechSpot report attributed to Dell COO Jeffrey Clarke an estimate of about 500 million Windows machines too old to run Windows 11, plus roughly 500 million more that could run it but had not been upgraded. Those are reported estimates about machines, not a Microsoft count of users instructed to purchase a PC.

What changed when Windows 10 support ended?
Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 Home and Pro on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 version 22H2 was its final version. After the end date, standard free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided. Microsoft’s end-of-service guidance says the PC will still work, while recommending a move to Windows 11.
End of support does not mean your computer stops booting or becomes automatically unusable. The practical change is that it no longer receives the standard security fixes that help protect it. Continuing to use an unsupported operating system means accepting that security trade-off.

Check your PC before deciding whether to spend money
Start with the computer you own rather than an estimate of how many machines worldwide may be affected. Microsoft recommends checking compatibility with the PC Health Check app or consulting the official Windows 11 requirements. Microsoft’s lifecycle announcement points users to those checks.
- Check eligibility: Use Microsoft’s PC Health Check app or compare the PC with the official Windows 11 requirements.
- If compatible: Consider upgrading to Windows 11 instead of replacing the computer. Microsoft’s unsupported-Windows guidance says eligible users can purchase and download Windows 11 Home or Pro, or buy it from a retailer. Microsoft: What does it mean if Windows isn’t supported?
- If incompatible: A new Windows 11 PC is one option. Whether replacement makes financial sense also depends on the existing computer’s condition and performance, the cost of an eligible alternative, and your needs.
- If you plan to keep Windows 10: Check Microsoft’s current Extended Security Updates (ESU) guidance for eligibility, enrollment terms, and availability before relying on it. Those details can change; do not assume an extension applies to your device without confirming the current terms. Microsoft’s Windows 10 transition guidance
Compare the real costs and trade-offs
| Choice | When it may fit | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Upgrade an eligible PC | Your computer meets Windows 11 requirements and still suits your work or home use. | Whether upgrading is available and economical for your setup; compare any upgrade cost with replacement. |
| Replace an ineligible PC | The computer cannot meet Windows 11 requirements, or its performance or condition no longer meets your needs. | Purchase price, workload needs, warranty and support, and the features you actually use. Microsoft lists Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung among PC makers, and Best Buy and Costco among retailers. Microsoft’s Windows end-of-support page |
| Keep using Windows 10 | You have a reason to retain the current PC and accept the security implications. | It continues to function, but standard security fixes have ended; check Microsoft’s live ESU terms before counting on extended coverage. |
If you do replace the computer, choose for your actual use: workload, price, screen and input preferences, battery life for a laptop, repairability, warranty, and Windows 11 eligibility. Nothing in Microsoft’s guidance makes a premium or AI-branded model necessary.

What the headline number can—and cannot—tell you
The reported estimates indicate that many Windows machines may face a choice about Windows 11, but they do not establish how many people Microsoft urged to buy a PC. The more useful personal-finance question is whether your particular computer is eligible for an upgrade and whether replacing it is worth the cost compared with your other options.
