In New Jersey, freshwater anglers generally need a fishing license if they are residents ages 16–69 or nonresidents age 16 and older. A trout stamp is also required for covered anglers fishing for or possessing trout or salmon, including when they release the fish. Saltwater anglers generally do not need a recreational fishing license, but most anglers age 16 and older must register annually with the state’s free Saltwater Recreational Registry.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s 2026 license page lists these freshwater license prices:

Trout stamp fees

Does catch-and-release fishing require a trout stamp?
Yes, if you are a covered angler fishing for trout or salmon. New Jersey requires the stamp even when the fish is released; the rule is tied to fishing for or possessing trout or salmon, not just keeping a catch. [New Jersey Fish and Wildlife]
Who needs the free saltwater registry?
Most recreational anglers age 16 and older must register annually if they fish marine or fresh tidal waters in New Jersey, or fish marine waters outside the state and land their catch in New Jersey. Registration is free. The state lists two exceptions: anglers under 16 and people who fish solely aboard a New Jersey-registered for-hire vessel. Freshwater, saltwater, and tidal boundaries
Do not assume that every tidal location has identical license rules. The state’s freshwater guidance identifies freshwater license requirements, while marine guidance covers saltwater registration; the boundary depends on the specific water. If you plan to fish near a freshwater–saltwater boundary, check the location against the current state fishing digest and confirm which license or registration applies. [Freshwater license guidance]
Resident status, validity, and where to get licensed
- To qualify for a resident license, you must have maintained an established New Jersey residence for the previous six months. Active-duty U.S. armed services personnel may buy a resident license regardless of current residence by providing proof of active duty. [New Jersey Fish and Wildlife]
- Freshwater licenses and trout stamps are valid from the date of purchase through December 31 of that year, rather than for 12 months from purchase. [New Jersey Fish and Wildlife]
- Buy freshwater licenses and stamps through the official New Jersey Fish and Wildlife license page or an authorized license agent. Complete saltwater registration through the state registry program.
Other marine activities can have separate permits
The absence of a general recreational saltwater fishing license does not mean every marine activity is permit-free. Shellfish harvesting and some crab-pot methods require separate licenses. Under the conditions listed by the state, recreational crabbing with hand lines, manually operated collapsible traps, or scoop nets may be done without a license. Free Fishing Days in 2026
