The $68 billion figure was presented as a drop in Tesla’s market value, but the article did not provide the dates and calculation needed to verify that exact amount. It was not evidence that Musk personally lost $68 billion, that Tesla lost $68 billion in cash, or that the company’s brand had been formally valued at that sum. What is well documented is a steep fall in Tesla registrations across several European markets in July 2025, even as electric-car registrations rose in Germany.
What does the $68 billion figure refer to?
The headline appeared in The Daily Galaxy on August 8, 2025. Its figure appears to refer to an alleged decline in Tesla’s market capitalization over two days. The article does not give the exact trading sessions, closing prices, share count, or calculation needed to independently confirm that amount.
These three kinds of “loss” are not interchangeable:
- Market capitalization: the stock-market value of a company’s outstanding shares. A fall means investors are valuing its equity lower; it does not mean the same amount of cash left the company.
- Personal net worth: an estimate of an individual’s assets and liabilities. A change in Tesla’s share price alone does not establish how much Musk’s net worth changed.
- Brand value: an estimate made using a valuation method or other defined measure. A share-price move does not directly measure a company’s brand damage.
So the responsible reading is that the source reported a roughly $68 billion fall in Tesla’s market value, not that Musk personally lost that amount or that Tesla’s brand was measured to be worth $68 billion less.

What happened to Tesla registrations in Europe?
The clearest evidence behind the collapse narrative is regional registration data for July 2025. Reuters-reported figures show large year-over-year declines in Germany, the United Kingdom, and a group of 10 European markets. Registrations are new vehicles recorded with authorities; they are a useful indicator, but they are not identical to global deliveries or a direct measure of consumer interest.
| Market or measure | July 2025 result | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Germany | 1,110 Tesla registrations, down 55.1% year over year | A sharp decline in one of Tesla’s major European markets. Reuters report republished by Investing.com |
| United Kingdom | 987 registrations, down nearly 60% year over year | A steep fall in another major market. Reuters report republished by LSE |
| Ten European markets | Approximately 45% fewer registrations year over year | The markets represented more than 80% of Tesla’s first-half sales in the EU, UK, and EFTA, according to the Reuters-reported figures. Reuters report republished by LSE |
| German battery-electric market | Registrations rose 58% year over year | Tesla’s decline came while the wider German battery-electric category grew. Reuters report republished by Investing.com |
These figures make Tesla’s European performance more concerning than a downturn caused solely by a shrinking EV market would be. They do not, however, establish that Tesla’s global business had collapsed: the data cover a particular month and region, and registrations can shift with deliveries, inventory, incentives, fleet orders, and production schedules.

Why did Tesla weaken while the EV market grew?
The reported evidence points to several possible pressures, not one proven cause. Reuters coverage cited backlash to Musk’s politics, intensifying competition, and the Model Y changeover among factors. Monthly registrations cannot establish how many purchases any one factor caused.
Musk’s politics and consumer reaction
Musk’s political activity was cited as one possible contributor to Tesla’s European weakness. That is a plausible reputational risk, particularly when a founder is closely associated with a consumer brand, but the registration figures do not quantify how many buyers avoided Tesla because of his politics. The available evidence does not support attributing the entire decline to that factor.

Engineered for Tesla-style charging standards, it ensures reliable daily home charging performance. Note: For J1772-equipped EVs, a compatible J1772 adapter is required (adapter not included)
The Model Y transition
Tesla’s refreshed Model Y had not immediately reversed the decline in the markets covered. That short-term result does not by itself prove the refresh failed. Buyers may have delayed purchases during the changeover, production and delivery timing may have affected registrations, or the refresh may not have attracted enough additional demand to offset other pressures. Tesla’s Q2 2025 update provides company context on its vehicle and autonomy plans, but it does not settle what caused a particular month’s registrations.
Competition from BYD and other manufacturers
BYD’s registrations grew sharply in Germany and Britain in the same period. In Germany, battery-electric registrations overall rose while Tesla’s fell; in Britain, BYD’s registrations reportedly increased more than fourfold as Tesla’s fell nearly 60%. These comparisons support the view that Tesla faced growing competition, but percentage growth alone does not establish that BYD sold more vehicles than Tesla in every market or had surpassed it on every measure.

- WORKS WITH EVERY TESLA + OTHER EVs: Built-in Tesla-style plug (NACS standard) connects directly to Tesla Model S, 3, X and Y - and any EV with a NACS port - no adapter needed. The plug even has a button to pop open your Tesla’s charge port. Non-Tesla J1772 vehicles can charge with a NACS-to-J1772 adapter (not included). The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway.
- HARDWIRED - PROFESSIONAL INSTALL: This Level 2 charger is hardwired (not plug-in), so a licensed electrician installs it per National Electrical Code. It delivers up to 48A on a dedicated 60A, 240V circuit - enough to charge most EVs fully overnight. Want more speed? Your can set DIP switches 4 and 5 to unlock 50A on a dedicated 70A circuit. Before ordering, check your car’s port type and that your electrical panel can support the circuit.
- CONTROL FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start and stop charging, set the charging speed (6-48A), get reminders, and track how much energy and money each charge uses. Requires a 2.4 GHz home WiFi network.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
A later Reuters-reported comparison also described European car sales resuming growth in July and BYD firmly ahead of Tesla in the market-share comparison it covered. That is evidence of a competitive shift in Europe, not proof that Tesla had lost leadership globally across deliveries, profits, charging, or autonomy. Reuters report republished by Investing.com.

The Daily Galaxy article identified a robotaxi presentation as a catalyst for the reported two-day market-value drop. The material available in that article does not establish the precise trading window, stock-price calculation, comparison with broader market movements, or whether the presentation was the primary cause. It is therefore safer to describe the event as a factor the article linked to investor concern, rather than as a verified cause of exactly $68 billion in lost value.

Investors can mark a company down because they doubt future growth, margins, autonomy plans, or management decisions. Such a repricing can be significant without representing an equivalent loss of cash or proving that a promised business will never succeed.
Does the evidence show Tesla’s reign is over?
No. The July 2025 data show serious weakness in important European markets and a widening competitive challenge. They do not, on their own, settle Tesla’s global position or establish that the decline is permanent. “Leadership” can mean different things: vehicle deliveries, market share in a specific region, profitability, brand strength, charging access, or autonomous-driving capability. A company can lose ground on one measure while retaining advantages on another.
The case for continued pressure would strengthen if Tesla’s registrations remained weak over multiple periods, new models failed to broaden demand, price competition squeezed margins, or autonomy promises did not become regulated, scalable revenue. The recovery case would strengthen with sustained registration growth, competitive products, better execution through model transitions, and evidence that consumer trust and future-business plans were translating into results. Neither one weak month nor one rebound would settle those questions.
As of the evidence tied to the 2025 headline, the sound conclusion is narrower than its prediction: Tesla had a pronounced European sales problem and meaningful brand and competitive risks, but the $68 billion figure was not independently documented there, and the claim that Tesla’s reign was over remained a forecast—not an established outcome.
