No. Starbucks did not explicitly say it was not buying Chipotle. On October 8, 2026, the company declined to comment on a report that it had explored a potential takeover, saying it does not comment on rumors and speculation. The status of any offer remains unclear in the reporting reviewed.

What Starbucks said—and what it did not say

Reuters reported that a Starbucks spokesperson said “the company does not comment on rumors and speculation” and reiterated that Starbucks was focused on its turnaround. That is a refusal to comment, not a direct denial that the company was considering or pursuing a transaction. Reuters report republished by Euronext

What the takeover report claims

Reuters summarized a Financial Times report that Starbucks had worked with advisers in recent months on a potential Chipotle takeover, citing people familiar with the matter. That is an anonymously sourced report of exploration; it does not establish that the companies agreed to a transaction or that one was completed. Reuters report republished by Euronext

Was an offer made?

The reporting reviewed does not establish whether Starbucks made a formal offer or whether it was still considering the deal. Axios said it was unclear whether an offer had been made or whether Starbucks was still considering the transaction; PYMNTS also said the proposal’s status could not be determined. Axios PYMNTS

Why the report attracted attention

Brian Niccol led Chipotle before becoming Starbucks CEO in 2024, a connection that helps explain the attention the report received. It does not establish why Starbucks might pursue a deal or whether one is under way. Reuters report republished by Euronext

Analysts quoted in coverage questioned the strategic rationale. William Blair analyst Sharon Zackfia told Axios that “there are no obvious revenue synergies between the two brands.” Axios noted possible exceptions such as shared loyalty programs or cross-brand product placements, while describing supply-chain efficiencies as likely limited. These are analyst views about a hypothetical transaction, not company statements or confirmed deal benefits. Axios

Starbucks’ stated turnaround focus

Starbucks reiterated that it was focused on its turnaround. In a September 24, 2026 Form 8-K, the company described its Back to Starbucks strategy as focused on revitalizing coffeehouses, enhancing the customer experience and strengthening its coffeehouse portfolio. The filing also disclosed planned closures representing approximately 1% of Starbucks’ more than 18,000 North American coffeehouses. It addresses the turnaround, not a Chipotle transaction.
