MrBeast’s reported effort to buy TikTok had a real basis in investor-group bids and discussions, but the evidence does not show that he personally made or completed a purchase offer. The activity concerned TikTok’s U.S. operations—not the worldwide platform—and TikTok announced a U.S. joint venture in January 2026.
What did MrBeast actually do?
In January 2025, Jimmy Donaldson, known as MrBeast, posted that he wanted to “buy TikTok so it doesn’t get banned.” The next day, he wrote that billionaires had contacted him and suggested they might try to make it happen. Those posts drew attention, but they do not establish a binding offer or personal financing commitment.
Contemporary coverage connected him to more than one effort to acquire TikTok’s U.S. operations. The distinction is important: being named by a bid group, or talking with potential buyers, is not the same as formally joining a bid.

What did his representative say?
On January 22, 2025, Matthew Hiltzik, Donaldson’s spokesperson, told the Associated Press: “Several buyers are holding ongoing discussions with Jimmy. He has no exclusive agreements with any of them.” That clarification supports a narrow conclusion: discussions were real, but he had not formally committed to one buyer at that point.
The next day, TechCrunch likewise reported that he was in talks with McCourt’s group but that no official agreement had been made. Reports saying he had “joined” a bid described what organizers or coverage said; they should not be read as proof of a signed commitment that his representative disputed.

What happened to TikTok’s U.S. business?
ByteDance said on April 4, 2025: “An agreement has not been executed. There are key matters to be resolved.” The company also said any agreement would be subject to approval under Chinese law. That was a status update about negotiations on that date, not the final outcome.
A September 25, 2025 U.S. executive order described a proposed qualified divestiture under which a newly established U.S. joint venture would operate TikTok’s U.S. application. The order set out a framework that included ByteDance holding less than 20% and safeguards involving U.S. data, algorithm operations, moderation, monitoring, and retraining.

On January 23, 2026, TikTok announced that TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC had been established in compliance with that executive order. The company named Silver Lake, Oracle, and MGX as managing investors, each holding 15%, and said ByteDance retained 19.9%. The announcement also listed other consortium participants.
TikTok described the venture as enabling more than 200 million Americans and 7.5 million businesses to continue using the service. That is the company’s figure and framing in its January 2026 announcement. Separately, the 2025 executive order described TikTok as used by about 170 million Americans; the figures refer to different sources and dates.
