The company also asked the Western Australian Government to extend project deadlines. This was a historical schedule revision—not evidence that the project later opened on that timetable.
What was delayed?
The Oakajee proposal paired a deepwater iron-ore port with a heavy-haul railway intended to give producers in Western Australia’s Mid-West a route to export markets. The proposed port site was about 25 km north of Geraldton, according to the Western Australian Government’s 20 March 2009 development-agreement announcement.
In the contemporary account, ABC News described the planned development as a $4 billion project. That was a reported estimate in 2010, not a final cost or a current budget. The company’s October 2010 update described a 45-million-tonne-per-year port concept, with two initial Cape-sized berths and standard-gauge rail. The planned railway was to connect initially with Crosslands Resources’ Jack Hills project, with possible links to Weld Range and Karara.
How the schedule changed
| Milestone | What was announced |
|---|---|
| First shipments | The target moved from early 2014 to early 2015, according to ABC News on 4 November 2010. |
| State project decision deadline | The Government later extended the final decision milestone from 31 March to 31 December 2011, in its 2 March 2011 statement. |
| Construction and operations forecast | In March 2011, the State’s timetable forecast construction starting in Q1 2012 and port operations in 2015. These were forecasts, not confirmation that either milestone occurred. |
These dates refer to different things: the first-shipment target, a State decision deadline, and the Government’s forecast for construction and operations.

What was known about the delay’s cause?
Murchison’s 25 October 2010 ASX announcement said the project partners were reviewing schedules and expected to announce a revised schedule soon. It also listed cost-estimate work, engineering, customer due diligence and government implementation agreements as matters in progress. Those details provide context, but the announcement does not identify a single cause for the schedule change. The contemporary reporting does not supply one either, so attributing the delay to a specific problem would go beyond what these sources establish.

Government milestones in 2011
When the State extended the final decision date in March 2011, it said the proponents were expected to complete feasibility studies, commit to proceeding, demonstrate foundation-customer contracts and agree with the State on construction and operations. The Government also stated that $678 million in Federal and State funding was committed for common-user facilities. That funding commitment was not the same measure as ABC’s reported $4 billion project estimate.

In October 2011, the State announced approval of a 570 km rail corridor for the proposed railway. Corridor approval was a planning milestone; it does not establish that track was built. The project’s exclusivity arrangement was due to end from 1 January 2012, and the Government said Mitsubishi planned to purchase Murchison’s interest and seek another partner. In March 2011, Premier Colin Barnett had said, “There will be no further extension to the deadline unless there are exceptional circumstances.” That was the Government’s stated position at the time, not a statement about the project’s eventual outcome.
Murchison’s exit in 2012
Murchison’s subsequent ASX quarterly report says its sale of interests in Crosslands and Oakajee Port and Rail to Mitsubishi was completed on 20 February 2012. The transaction records a change in ownership; it does not by itself establish whether Oakajee was later built or began operating. The sources cited here do not establish the project’s ultimate status as of 8 October 2026.
