No confirmed acquisition was reported. On July 17, 2024, Reuters reported that GitLab was exploring a sale and that Datadog was among the interested parties, citing people familiar with the matter. Reuters said no agreement was certain. The report described possible interest—not a confirmed offer, signed deal, or completed acquisition.
What Reuters reported—and what it did not
Reuters reporters Milana Vinn and Anirban Sen said GitLab was exploring a sale with investment bankers after attracting acquisition interest. The report named Datadog as one of the interested parties. Its sources were anonymous because the matter was confidential.
Those claims do not establish that Datadog made an offer or that GitLab accepted one. Reuters explicitly said an agreement was not certain and reported that neither company responded to its requests for comment at the time. That silence in July 2024 is not a current company statement.

What later public company information shows
GitLab’s official investor materials identify Q2 FY2027 as its latest reported quarter in materials dated September 2026. Its official press-release index includes a September 17, 2026 product release. The surfaced materials do not announce a Datadog acquisition. GitLab’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended July 31, 2026 describes ongoing operations, including 11,114 base customers, up 8% year over year, and 1,571 customers with annual recurring revenue above $100,000, up 17%. These are company-reported operating figures, not evidence for or against confidential acquisition discussions.

The absence of an announcement in those later materials does not establish whether private discussions occurred or what became of them. The public evidence described here supports only the narrower conclusion: Reuters reported possible sale exploration and Datadog interest in 2024; the report did not establish a transaction.
Why the $8 billion figure is not a current valuation
Reuters described GitLab’s market value as about $8 billion at the time of its July 17, 2024 report. That is a dated market figure, not a current valuation, an offer price, or an estimate of what Datadog might have paid. Market value changes with share prices and the number of shares outstanding, while a takeover offer can involve different terms.

How to read the analyst comment
Reuters also quoted Needham analyst Mike Cikos, who called GitLab an attractive acquisition candidate and said he viewed a potential Datadog tie-up positively. That was an analyst’s opinion, not a statement from either company and not confirmation that negotiations had advanced.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the companies’ product integration prove a deal?
No. Datadog documentation lists a GitLab source-code integration, which establishes a product connection. It does not substantiate acquisition interest or a corporate transaction; software integrations can exist between independent companies.
