In May, China announced a commitment to buy 200 Boeing aircraft, which Boeing confirmed; by September, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer described progress on that commitment. The aircraft mix and final airline-level orders remained unspecified in the cited coverage.
Where the 500-aircraft figure came from
On March 6, Reuters relayed a Bloomberg report that Boeing was negotiating with China over as many as 500 737 MAX jets, alongside a separate discussion of about 100 787 and 777X widebodies. Reuters said it could not confirm the report and cited unresolved sticking points. That was a reported negotiation, not a confirmed order. Reuters, March 6, 2026
The report did not identify a final aircraft mix, a delivery schedule, a contract value, or which Chinese airlines might take aircraft. Those details should not be inferred from the headline figure.
What China and Boeing later confirmed
On May 14, President Donald Trump announced a commitment for China to buy 200 Boeing aircraft. Boeing confirmed the 200-aircraft figure, but the Associated Press reported that the company gave no types or further details. Boeing described its China visit as having reopened the market to orders, not as having disclosed completed airline contracts. Associated Press, May 15, 2026

Reuters later reported Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg calling the commitment an “initial tranche.” Reuters also explained that China’s government allocates narrowbody aircraft to airlines, after which Boeing negotiates firm orders with individual airlines. A government commitment and a firm airline order are therefore different stages in the process. Reuters, May 28, 2026
What the September update said
On September 21, Reuters reported U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer saying about 140 aircraft were “in a good state” and 10 more were being written into orders. Those figures described progress on the May commitment; they were not a count of delivered aircraft. Reuters said Greer gave no indication that an additional order was near. Why politics featured in the negotiations
In an April 22 interview with Reuters, Ortberg said: “Without the administration’s support, I don’t think we’ll see any near-term large orders out of China.” Reuters also reported that access to critical spare parts had been a concern and that Ortberg said Boeing had reached “a good solution” with airlines on those concerns. - Which Chinese airlines will receive aircraft and how many each will take.
- The final aircraft models included in the 200-aircraft commitment.
- Delivery dates and final contract terms or value.
- Whether the reported March discussions over a larger package will lead to additional orders.
The cited coverage establishes a reported 500-jet negotiation, a later 200-aircraft commitment, and subsequent progress on that commitment. It does not establish a completed 500-aircraft purchase or a firm 750-aircraft deal.
