Tyson Foods’ six chicken-plant closures in 2023 and early 2024 left some contract growers facing a difficult mismatch: specialized barns and loans that could last for years, but poultry contracts that could end sooner. Some production could be rerouted to another Tyson facility; other growers could lose their contracts. The outcome depended on each farm’s circumstances, and reporting published in May 2024 does not establish what happened to the growers profiled afterward.
Which Tyson plants closed, and when?
Tyson announced the Glen Allen and Van Buren closures in March 2023, saying they would improve use of capacity at its remaining plants. The Associated Press reported that both were scheduled to close on May 12, 2023. Tyson’s fiscal 2023 Form 10-K identifies six Chicken segment processing facilities approved for closure:
| Facility | Status in Tyson’s fiscal 2023 filing |
|---|---|
| Glen Allen, Virginia | Ceased operations during fiscal 2023 |
| Van Buren, Arkansas | Ceased operations during fiscal 2023 |
| Corydon, Indiana | Closure expected in the first half of fiscal 2024 |
| Dexter, Missouri | Closure expected in the first half of fiscal 2024 |
| Noel, Missouri | Closure expected in the first half of fiscal 2024 |
| North Little Rock, Arkansas | Closure expected in the first half of fiscal 2024 |
The later four dates are the expectation recorded in the fiscal 2023 filing, not a precise last operating day for each location. Tyson described production shifting to other facilities.
Why a plant closure does not mean every grower faced the same outcome
A processing plant is part of a production network: when one closes, the company may reroute birds to another plant, or a grower’s contract may end. The University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture’s 2023 analysis describes those as two basic possibilities. Rerouting can preserve a grower’s relationship for the contract’s duration, but may mean longer delivery distances or idle periods between flocks; it is not the same as losing the contract.

For a grower who is not rerouted, finding another integrator—an agricultural company that coordinates poultry production and processing—may be necessary to keep the farm operating. Whether that is feasible depends in part on whether another company operates nearby and whether the farm’s barns meet its requirements.
Why the debt can outlast the poultry contract
Chicken barns are costly, specialized assets, while a contract relationship may not last as long as the financing used to build them. Investigate Midwest reported in May 2024 that former Tyson contract growers it interviewed had borrowed more than $2 million to become Tyson growers. Those accounts describe individual interviewees, not a survey, average, or total for all affected growers.

The same investigation reported that some interviewees said buyouts offered to them would not cover their remaining debt. Tyson told Investigate Midwest: “Tyson Foods is proud to partner with a network of independent growers across the country, and we value the contribution that these growers make to our business. Closing plants is always a difficult decision, and we understand the impact it has on the people and businesses in those communities. We work to help our team members and partners through that transition, and Tyson Foods has provided affected growers with several options to honor our contractual commitments and allow growers to receive fair value.” The gap between the company’s description of its options and growers’ reported debt burden is central to the uncertainty; the reporting does not establish that every grower received the same offer or faced the same balance.
Investigate Midwest put those individual accounts against broader cost pressures: it reported that chicken-raising costs rose 35% from 2012 to 2022, Arkansas poultry grower debt tripled from 2003 to 2022, and Missouri poultry grower debt increased six-fold over that period. These are source-reported figures for those periods, not measurements of the debt of the specific Tyson growers interviewed.

Investigate Midwest also reported a USDA estimate of roughly $400,000 to build a new chicken barn. A new barn’s estimated construction cost does not reveal any particular farm’s loan balance, remaining term, or resale value.
What Tyson’s $322 million closure charge does—and does not—mean
Tyson reported $322 million in fiscal 2023 charges related to the closures. Its filing says these were primarily for grower contract terminations, impairments, accelerated depreciation, severance, retention, and related costs. The figure is a company-wide accounting total across those categories; the filing does not identify it as money paid to growers, nor does it establish how much any individual grower received.

Aaron Johnson, co-policy director at the Rural Advancement Foundation International, characterized the allocation of risk to Investigate Midwest this way: “The model is designed to put that debt load external to the company, so that if the company decides to shut down a facility, they are not left holding the bag. The contract growers are.” This is Johnson’s assessment of the business model, not a court finding about the rights or obligations in an individual grower’s contract.

| Possible path | What it can mean | Key factors to assess |
|---|---|---|
| Continue under a rerouted Tyson contract | Production may move to another Tyson plant for the contract’s remaining duration; longer hauling distances or gaps between flocks can affect operations. | Whether Tyson reroutes the farm, delivery distance, flock timing, and the resulting cash flow. |
| Seek a contract with another integrator | A new relationship may sustain the farm if another company is available locally and the barns satisfy its standards. | Local processing competition; barn age and condition; the new company’s specifications; retrofit costs; existing debt; and expected cash flow. |
| Leave poultry production | Some interviewees told Investigate Midwest they had sold property, retired, or sought off-farm work after contracts ended. | Outstanding loan obligations, assets and sale proceeds, other income, and the terms of any transition offer. |
These are not guaranteed remedies or a ranking of best choices. Investigate Midwest reported that one Missouri grower estimated retrofitting his Tyson-oriented barns to another company’s specifications would cost nearly $2 million. That is one grower’s estimate, not a typical retrofit price or a general measure of what another integrator would require.
What the reporting establishes—and what remains unknown
The May 8, 2024, Investigate Midwest investigation describes former Tyson growers’ reported debts, buyout concerns, and different responses to losing poultry contracts. It does not verify the later outcome for each profiled grower. It therefore cannot support a claim that all affected farmers lost their farms, went bankrupt, or remained without contracts.
For a grower assessing a closure-related decision, the important figures are farm-specific: the remaining loan balance and payment schedule, any contractual payment or offer, whether production can be rerouted, the cost and feasibility of meeting another integrator’s specifications, and the cash flow under each realistic operating plan. The cited reporting does not establish one solution that applies to every farm.
