China’s U.S. Soybean Imports Jumped in March 2025 as Brazil Prepared to Take the Lead

China imported 2.44 million metric tons of U.S. soybeans in March 2025, up 12% from a year earlier. But that monthly surge reflected purchases made months before, while Brazil’s newly harvested crop was expected to supply more of China’s imports in the following months. The distinction matters: March customs arrivals were observed data; Brazil’s projected lead was an outlook.

What China imported in March 2025

China’s General Administration of Customs reported 2.44 million metric tons of U.S. soybeans arriving in March 2025, 12% more than in March 2024. The United States supplied just under three-quarters of China’s soybean imports that month. Brazil sent 0.95 million metric tons, down 69% year over year and equivalent to 27% of the total. Reuters reported that delayed harvesting slowed Brazilian shipments. Overall, China’s March soybean arrivals were the lowest for that month since 2008.

The report appeared in Reuters coverage dated April 20, 2025, and was syndicated by Successful Farming on April 21. Its headline describes March 2025, not March 2026. Read the Reuters report syndicated by Successful Farming.

Why U.S. arrivals rose

The March increase was principally about when previously purchased beans arrived, rather than evidence of a lasting change in supplier preference. Reuters attributed the U.S. shipments to purchases Chinese buyers secured in late 2024, amid concern about a possible renewed U.S.-China trade dispute. Rosa Wang, an analyst at Shanghai-based agro-consultancy JCI, said: “March arrivals reflect crushers’ precautionary purchases in Q4 last year amid concerns over renewed trade tensions should Trump return to office,”

In other words, customs arrivals in March reflected earlier buying decisions and shipment timing. They should not be read on their own as a measure of current purchasing behavior or future trade volumes.

How the first quarter compared

For January through March 2025, U.S. shipments to China totaled 11.6 million tons, up 62% year over year. Brazil shipped 4.5 million tons, down 55%. Reuters calculated that the United States accounted for 68% of Chinese soybean imports in the quarter and Brazil for 26%.

Monthly arrivals and calendar-quarter shipments answer different questions, so the periods should not be mixed. The figures and quarter-share calculations above are from customs data as reported by Reuters; they are not USDA marketing-year totals or forecasts.

Why Brazil was expected to lead afterward

Brazil’s March slump did not contradict the expectation that it would become the leading supplier later in 2025. Its harvest season was beginning, bringing a new crop to market after the shipment delays cited for March. Analysts cited by Reuters forecast that China’s April–June 2025 soybean imports could reach a record 31.3 million tons, driven by newly harvested Brazilian beans from a bumper crop. That number was a forecast, not a confirmed import total.

How trade policy shaped the outlook

A 2025 USDA Foreign Agricultural Service report said an additional 10% tariff on U.S. soybeans had been announced to begin March 10, 2025. Its analysis assumed that tariff would remain in place through marketing year 2025/26 and linked Brazil’s rising share of China’s market partly to Brazil’s persistent price advantage. These were the report’s policy assumption and analysis, not timeless tariff guidance. USDA FAS, Oilseeds and Products Annual: China – People’s Republic of (2025).

A later USDA FAS report described the market at a different point. As of February 26, 2026, export-sales data showed China had purchased or been shipped 10.8 million metric tons against a 12-million-ton U.S. soybean purchase commitment. Another 2.19 million metric tons had been sold to “Unknown” destinations and were not confirmed to be China-bound. USDA said South American availability and a remaining tariff on U.S. soybeans meant Chinese purchases had, at that point, been made only by state-owned enterprises; it also described Brazilian new-crop prices as significantly below U.S. origin prices. USDA FAS, Oilseeds and Products Annual: China – People’s Republic of (2026).

Those later figures are export-sales data, not completed customs arrivals, and they do not revise the March 2025 record. The unconfirmed “Unknown” sales should not be counted as China purchases.

  • OPTIMAL PLANTING GUIDELINES FOR MAXIMUM YIELD: For best results, plant soybean seeds at a depth of 0.75 to 1.5 inches, with row spacing between 7.5 and 15 inches, depending on soil type and tillage. This ensures uniform seed placement and optimal growth, adapting well to midwestern states and capturing a significant percentage of non-GMO acres.

  • ECONOMIC AND NUTRITIONAL: As the most economically important bean globally, soybeans provide essential vegetable protein for millions and are key ingredients in hundreds of chemical products. A 60-pound bushel of our soybeans seed yields about 11 pounds of crude soybean oil and 47 pounds of soybean meal. Beneficial for producing shelf-stable goods for long-term use.

How to read the headline’s two time frames

  • March 2025: observed customs arrivals favored the United States, partly because of late-2024 purchases and Brazil’s harvest delays.
  • January–March 2025: U.S. shipments led the calendar-quarter totals and calculated origin share; Brazil’s volume was lower than a year earlier.
  • April–June 2025: the expectation of Brazilian dominance rested on an analyst forecast tied to the start of Brazil’s harvest, not a realized total.
  • February 2026: USDA export-sales figures and its price and tariff observations describe a later trade environment, not 2025 customs arrivals.
