No: China has not announced a finalized 500-jet Boeing order. Bloomberg reported in March 2026 that Boeing was nearing a deal for 500 737 MAX aircraft, but the confirmed announcement in May was an initial commitment for 200 Boeing aircraft. By September, U.S. officials described progress on that 200-aircraft commitment—not completion of all 200 firm airline orders.
Where the 500-aircraft figure came from
On March 6, 2026, Bloomberg reported that Boeing was nearing a deal for 500 737 MAX jets, citing people familiar with the negotiations. The report also described separate discussions for about 100 widebody aircraft, including 787 Dreamliners and 777X jets. Reuters said it could not independently confirm the 500-aircraft report and that sources described unresolved sticking points. The 500 figure was therefore a reported negotiating possibility, not a confirmed sale. Bloomberg and Reuters reporting
What China actually announced
In May 2026, the White House said China had approved an initial purchase commitment for 200 American-made Boeing aircraft for Chinese airlines. Its fact sheet did not name aircraft models, airline buyers, or delivery timing. The announcement was for 200 aircraft—not 500—and did not establish that every aircraft had already become a firm order with an airline. White House fact sheet
How a government commitment becomes airline orders
Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg described the 200 aircraft as an “initial tranche,” Reuters reported on May 28. Reuters explained that after the Chinese government commits to a batch of narrowbody aircraft, it allocates aircraft to individual airlines; Boeing then negotiates firm orders with those carriers. That sequence separates a government-level commitment from finalized airline-level contracts. Reuters, May 28, 2026

What officials said about progress by September
On September 21, 2026, Reuters reported U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer’s account of progress on the 200-aircraft commitment. Greer said about 140 aircraft were “in a good state,” with another 10 being written down. Reuters also reported that Ortberg expected further increments to be announced by airlines at their own pace. Those updates do not establish that all 200 aircraft had become firm orders, and Reuters did not publish a complete final order list. Reuters, September 21, 2026
