Boeing’s current executive biographies list Kelly Ortberg as president and CEO, while its 2026 proxy identifies Gitlin as a Boeing director and Carrier Global’s chairman and CEO. Those records establish their roles, not a new CEO search or Gitlin’s candidacy.
What is known about Boeing’s CEO succession?
Boeing announced on July 31, 2024, that its board had elected Robert K. “Kelly” Ortberg president and CEO, effective August 8, 2024. He succeeded Dave Calhoun. Boeing’s executive biographies continue to identify Ortberg as president and CEO.
In its 2025 proxy statement, Boeing described a board-led selection process. The company said its independent directors concluded Ortberg had the skills and experience to stabilize the business and lead its next chapter. The company’s account concerns the selection that resulted in Ortberg’s appointment; it does not establish that another search is underway.
Who is David Gitlin?
Boeing’s 2026 proxy statement lists David L. Gitlin as a Boeing director since 2022 and as chairman and CEO of Carrier Global. Boeing elected him to its board in June 2022, assigning him to the Aerospace Safety and Finance committees.

The proxy describes experience in aerospace, engineering and technology leadership, complex manufacturing, safety, risk management, and highly regulated industries. That background helps explain why his name may draw attention in succession speculation, but it is not evidence that Boeing has considered or selected him for the CEO role.
What does the rumor establish—and what remains unverified?
The reviewed official Boeing materials do not announce a new CEO search or identify Gitlin as a candidate. The report said to have originated the rumor was not identified in the available materials, so its publication date, cited sources, supporting evidence, and any response from Boeing or Gitlin cannot be assessed here. Without that original report or an official statement, the claim should be treated as unconfirmed.

For context, Boeing’s June 21, 2022 board announcement quoted Larry Kellner, then Boeing’s chairman, describing Gitlin as “a proven leader with deep aerospace, manufacturing and supply chain expertise.” Kellner was discussing Gitlin’s board appointment and experience—not a CEO search.

- A Boeing announcement or filing that explicitly says the board has opened a CEO search.
- A report that identifies its sources and explains what evidence connects Gitlin to the process.
- A direct response from Boeing or Gitlin confirming or disputing the claim.
Until such evidence appears, the supported facts are limited: Ortberg is Boeing’s listed president and CEO, and Gitlin is a Boeing director who also leads Carrier Global. The claim that Gitlin is a top candidate remains unverified.
