The reporting does not establish that Audi was the “second major automaker” to take such action, or whether the specific freeze later continued.
What Audi reportedly did
Reuters, in a report republished by Yahoo Autos on April 7, 2025, said Audi was holding cars that had reached U.S. ports after April 2 while it assessed the effect of the new import duties. An Audi spokesperson told Reuters that the company had sent dealers a memo freezing shipments from April 2 until further notice. Reuters report republished by Yahoo Autos.
These were two related but distinct measures: vehicles already at U.S. ports were being held, while shipments to dealers were frozen. A port hold does not mean the same thing as a halt to every vehicle already inside the country, and the report did not say that Audi stopped sales from existing U.S. inventory.
Why tariffs prompted the reported pause
The reported trigger was the 25% tariff on auto imports announced by the United States on April 2, 2025. Audi was assessing how the duties would affect vehicles entering the country, according to Reuters. The report described uncertainty over the tariff’s impact; it did not establish how much any particular Audi model’s price would change.

Audi’s sourcing made the issue relevant across its U.S. lineup. Reuters reported that the Q5, Audi’s best-selling U.S. model at the time, was produced in Mexico, while the brand’s other U.S. models came from Europe or elsewhere. The report therefore described exposure across multiple production locations, rather than a disruption confined to one plant or one model.
Was Audi the second automaker to suspend shipments?
The Reuters report cited here documents Audi’s reported port hold and shipment freeze, but it does not substantiate the ranking “second major automaker” or identify which automaker would have acted first. Treat that phrase as unverified headline framing, not as a confirmed comparison. A reliable comparison would need to establish each company’s action, start date, duration, affected vehicles and markets, and whether shipments later resumed.

What later Audi statements do—and do not—tell us
Audi’s January 14, 2026, year-end release said U.S. tariff policy affected the automotive sector and shaped consumer behavior during 2025. Audi also reported more than 1.6 million deliveries worldwide in 2025, down approximately 3% year over year. Audi’s first-quarter 2026 release said its financial outlook “is based on the tariff situation as of end-April.” That confirms tariff conditions remained relevant to the company’s outlook, but the statement does not say that the 2025 shipment freeze was still in force. Accordingly, the April 2025 report supports a historical account of a port hold and dealer shipment freeze. The later Audi statements cited here do not confirm when or whether those specific shipping measures ended, nor do they establish current U.S. inventory, prices, or shipment operations.

Reuters also reported that Volkswagen had around 37,000 Volkswagen-brand vehicles in U.S. inventory, enough for approximately two months of sales, according to a Volkswagen spokesperson. That figure concerns Volkswagen-brand vehicles, not Audi stock. It should not be used to infer how many Audi cars were available to U.S. buyers or how long Audi could maintain sales during its reported pause.
