David Ellison’s Skydance has completed two landmark deals: its merger with Paramount Global on August 7, 2025, and its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery on October 6, 2026. The combined company, named Skydance, now controls a vast mix of studios, streaming services, television networks, news operations, sports and entertainment libraries. That scale is the achievement; integrating the businesses, managing the debt and proving the promised savings are the tests still ahead.
What Ellison’s two deals created
Skydance Media and Paramount Global completed their merger on August 7, 2025. The company was then described as Paramount, a Skydance Corporation. On October 6, 2026, Skydance announced that it had completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery and that the combined company would be called Skydance. The two closings, a little over a year apart, turned a series of acquisitions into an integration challenge.

The new company brings together two major film studios, two global streaming services, CBS, HBO, cable networks, CBS News and CNN, sports assets, extensive content libraries and major franchises. That portfolio offers reach across different kinds of entertainment and distribution. It also means managing overlapping operations and deciding how to allocate attention and investment across many businesses.

In its 2025 merger announcement, David Ellison said his vision was to honor exceptional storytelling while modernizing how the company makes and delivers content. That is a statement of intent, not evidence yet of how the combined company will perform.

What the merger means for TV and streaming
Two apps, with a unified service planned
Paramount+ and HBO Max are expected to unify into one service over time, according to Associated Press reporting on October 6–7, 2026. The reporting did not specify a final name, timetable, bundle composition or consumer price. The deal therefore does not, by itself, establish when subscribers will move to a combined product or what they will pay.
For customers, the practical questions are whether each service remains available separately, whether a combined subscription changes the overall cost, and how the companies handle existing accounts and content. Until the company announces concrete terms, subscribers should distinguish the current offers from a future service that has not been fully specified.

More scale does not guarantee a better customer experience
A single service could bring a larger library under one subscription, but that alone does not establish better value. Price, the mix of content, app usability and the treatment of existing subscriptions will determine whether customers see an improvement. None of those outcomes is settled by the acquisition announcement.

Synergies are a management target
Skydance says it is targeting at least $6 billion in run-rate synergies within three years. This is a company target, not a verified amount saved. A run-rate figure describes an annualized pace once savings are in place; it is not the same as cash already saved, nor does it establish the cost of achieving the savings. The cited announcement does not show how much has been realized.
Rank #3
For a financial assessment, the useful measure will be reported progress against the target alongside the costs and operating effects of integration. Cost reductions alone would not show whether the company is also sustaining content investment, retaining audiences or improving the underlying businesses.
Purchase price and estimated debt are different figures
Associated Press reported the Warner Bros. acquisition price as $81 billion, excluding debt. Separately, AP attributed an estimate of around $80 billion in net debt following the acquisitions to Morningstar. The purchase price and the estimated net-debt figure have different scopes: one is the reported transaction price excluding debt, while the other is an analyst estimate of net debt. The estimate is not a company-reported final balance.
Rank #4
The debt estimate makes financing and cash generation central to the next phase, but it should not be treated as an exact closing figure or added mechanically to the acquisition price. The figures alone do not establish the company’s future capacity to invest or its financial performance.
What the company says it will produce
Skydance said the combined businesses would deliver at least 30 theatrical films and more than 180 television shows and series. Those are company-announced output commitments, not a record of titles already released. They should also be kept distinct from the more detailed theatrical terms AP reported as part of the settlement commitments.

- Helpful in various ways
AP reported a commitment to distribute 30 theatrical films annually for two years, followed by 32 annually for the next three years. Only half of those films must be produced or jointly produced by the company. AP also reported a commitment to add at least $1.5 billion to U.S. film-production spending over five years. These requirements describe specific commitments; they do not settle the creative mix, the quality or reception of the films, or the effect on the combined company’s finances.

On June 12, 2026, the U.S. Justice Department’s Antitrust Division said its investigation found the proposed Warner Bros. Discovery acquisition was not likely to harm competition or American consumers in the markets it reviewed: streaming video on demand, linear television, and theatrical film development, production or distribution. That is the division’s assessment of those markets, not a forecast of every effect on viewers, workers or creators.
Separately, AP reported settlement commitments concerning theatrical releases and U.S. production spending. Regulatory conclusions and settlement terms are not the same as proof that the combined company will preserve a particular level of creative opportunity or deliver lower prices. Those effects will depend on decisions and outcomes after the transaction.

The tests that remain
The acquisitions establish the company’s size, but not whether its parts can work together effectively. The unresolved tests are practical and measurable over time:
- Streaming: whether the services unify as planned, what customers are offered, and at what price.
- Financial execution: whether Skydance makes progress toward its synergy target and how integration costs and debt affect investment capacity.
- Content: whether the announced production plans translate into a sustainable slate that audiences want to watch.
- People and operations: how the company handles overlapping businesses and the effects integration has on employment and creative work.
Those outcomes are not established by the deal closings or the company’s targets. The next phase will show whether Ellison’s expanded portfolio can function as a coherent business rather than simply a larger collection of assets.
