How to Plan for New Tax Rules Before Year-End 2026

Plan for 2026 taxes by projecting your income and payments, checking eligibility for new deductions, and comparing year-end choices with their effects in 2027 and later.

Before December 31, 2026, project your federal tax position for both 2026 and 2027, then check which new rules actually apply to you. A deduction or tax break is not automatically a reason to change your plans: compare the tax effect with your cash needs, eligibility, records, and future-year consequences. State tax rules may differ.

What changed for 2026, and what does that mean for your plan?

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, Public Law 119-21, was enacted on July 4, 2025. IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32 sets 2026 inflation adjustments while reflecting amendments made by the law. The National Taxpayer Advocate’s 2025 Annual Report to Congress says the Act made more than 100 changes to the tax code. The practical task is to identify provisions that fit your circumstances and verify their conditions—not to assume every change lowers your tax.

The IRS’s 2025 announcement of 2026 inflation adjustments gives these federal figures:

Tax-year 2026 item Published amount Qualification
Standard deduction $16,100 for single or married filing separately; $32,200 for married filing jointly or surviving spouses; $24,150 for heads of household Federal amounts for tax year 2026; your filing status and deductions affect whether itemizing is more beneficial.
Top individual marginal rate 37%; threshold above $640,600 for single filers and $768,700 for married couples filing jointly Federal tax-year thresholds reported by the IRS. A marginal rate applies to income within the relevant bracket, not to all income.

These figures are starting points, not a calculation of your tax bill. The National Taxpayer Advocate says certain new deductions—for tips, overtime pay, qualifying car-loan interest, and an additional senior deduction—require Schedule 1-A, attached to Form 1040. Eligibility conditions, limits, and phaseouts matter; do not treat these items as universally available or as making all related income “tax free.”

How should you build a year-end projection?

Estimate your full-year income and deductions, then compare plausible 2026 choices with their effects in 2027 and later. UBS Advanced Planning Group’s year-end guidance recommends reviewing projected income, deductions, and credits for the current and following year and checking estimated payments. Its guide concerns 2025 planning, so use it for the planning process rather than as authority for 2026 thresholds.

  1. Update the inputs. Gather current pay and business income, investment gains and losses, deductions, credits, withholding, and estimated tax payments. Include transactions you expect to complete before year-end.
  2. Run more than one scenario. Compare your likely 2026 taxable income with reasonable alternatives, such as changing the timing of income or deductions. Use a separate estimate for 2027 if a choice shifts tax between years.
  3. Check the actual tax effect. Look at marginal rates, deduction eligibility, credits, and any applicable phaseouts. A larger deduction does not necessarily produce a larger overall benefit if it changes another part of your tax picture.
  4. Review payment sufficiency. Compare projected tax with withholding and estimated payments. If a shortfall or material transaction is possible, ask a qualified tax professional what options are available and when they must be taken.

For significant transactions, get advice early enough to compare alternatives before committing. A tax estimate can help frame the decision, but it is not a substitute for individualized professional advice.

Should you itemize or time charitable gifts differently?

Recalculate itemized deductions rather than assuming the standard deduction or itemizing is best. The 2026 framework described by KPMG US and WebsterRogers LLP includes changes affecting charitable deductions and high-income itemized deductions. Among the described charitable provisions are a 0.5%-of-adjusted-gross-income floor for itemizers and a deduction for certain cash gifts by non-itemizers, capped at $1,000 for single taxpayers or $2,000 for joint filers. Check the applicable rules and your eligibility before relying on either provision.

For state and local tax (SALT) deductions, do not rely on a broad headline figure without checking the year-specific rule. KPMG US’s 2025 guide describes a $40,000 limitation, phased down for modified adjusted gross income above $500,000, with a $10,000 minimum cap through 2029. WebsterRogers LLP’s 2026 article gives a $40,400 cap for 2026. Because those secondary sources report different amounts, confirm the applicable 2026 limit against current IRS or Treasury guidance and your facts before using it in a projection.

Depending on your itemization status, income, assets, and giving goals, you could compare donating in 2026 with spreading gifts across years, bunching gifts into one year, using a donor-advised fund, or giving appreciated securities. These approaches have different tax and financial consequences; the deduction alone does not establish which approach is preferable.

What should business owners review before year-end?

Model both the business and personal effects of decisions made by December 31. WebsterRogers LLP identifies these areas for review:

  • Capital spending and depreciation: Review planned purchases, qualifying property, acquisition and placed-in-service dates, Section 179, and bonus depreciation. WebsterRogers describes restored 100% bonus depreciation for qualifying property acquired after January 19, 2025; confirm that a specific asset and transaction meet the statutory rules before counting on it.
  • Business-interest limits and QBI: Check whether the business-interest limitation or qualified business income deduction affects your projection, and confirm eligibility using the rules for your business.
  • Records and reporting: Check bookkeeping, payroll, and year-end records so that transactions and amounts can be substantiated and reported correctly.

Accelerating a purchase for a deduction can use cash, require financing, or change deductions available in later years. Compare the tax timing with the purchase’s business purpose, cash flow, financing cost, and expected future tax position before deciding.

How should families approach gifts and estate planning?

Review wealth transfers alongside income-tax effects. KPMG US’s 2025 guide describes a $15 million lifetime gift, estate, and generation-skipping transfer tax exemption per person for the 2026 framework; confirm the current applicable rules before relying on that figure. The choice to gift an asset now or retain it can also affect the income-tax consequences of transferring appreciated property and the asset’s potential basis treatment. Consider the transfer’s tax, estate, and family effects together rather than treating the exemption figure as a recommendation to make a gift.

If you are considering a substantial transfer, coordinate tax advice with your estate documents and the intended recipient’s circumstances. A change to a will or trust should be made with appropriate legal advice.

Which choices are worth comparing?

Decision Compare Why it matters
Timing income or deductions 2026 tax effect versus expected 2027 or later income and rates A move that reduces tax in one year may shift it into another year when your circumstances differ.
Standard deduction or itemizing Your eligible itemized deductions, charitable gifts, and applicable SALT limit against the standard deduction Eligibility and year-specific limits determine whether an itemized approach changes your result.
Capital purchase Potential deduction timing against cash, financing, business need, and future-year tax position A deduction does not by itself make a purchase financially worthwhile.
Gift appreciated property Lifetime transfer and estate considerations against retaining the asset and its potential basis consequences Income-tax and estate-tax effects may point in different directions.

How to verify a tax rule before acting

Use the IRS’s 2026 inflation adjustments and Revenue Procedure 2025-32 for year-specific federal amounts. Treat secondary guidance according to its date and scope: KPMG US’s guide is based on law in effect August 1, 2025, while WebsterRogers LLP’s article addresses 2026 but is also a secondary explanation. For a material deduction, purchase, gift, or income-timing decision, have a qualified tax advisor confirm the current rule, eligibility, deadlines, and records needed for your situation.
