Crypto Derivatives Trading Explained: A Guide to Futures, Options and Perpetuals in 2026

Crypto derivatives are contracts whose value is tied to a cryptocurrency or related price measure. Futures, options and perpetual contracts can provide price exposure or hedge an existing holding without necessarily buying or receiving the crypto itself. Their obligations, settlement rules and costs differ by contract; leverage can magnify losses, and losses can exceed the amount initially posted as margin.

What are crypto derivatives?

A derivative is a contract whose value refers to an underlying asset or price measure. In crypto markets, that reference may be a cryptocurrency’s spot price, an index or another contract-defined measure. A derivative can be used to seek exposure to price movements or to offset exposure someone already has. It does not necessarily involve buying or taking delivery of the cryptocurrency.

The label alone does not tell you what you owe, how the contract settles, how much margin it requires or how losses are handled. Those details come from the specific contract and the rules of the venue where it trades.

How do crypto futures, options and perpetuals differ?

The three common structures have different time limits and obligations. In particular, an option on a futures contract gives its purchaser a right, while a futures contract itself is an agreement with obligations under its terms.

Contract Expiry and basic structure Obligation or right Settlement and price reference Funding or carrying cost
Futures Agreement to buy or sell a specified amount at a future date under fixed terms. Most contracts are closed before delivery. The contract creates obligations for its parties under its terms. Terms determine whether the contract provides for delivery or cash settlement. Crypto futures may settle in dollars against a specified index or auction price; check the contract’s reference-price method. Contract-specific; not stated as a universal rule in the CFTC’s Basics of Futures Trading or Customer Advisory: Understand the Risks of Virtual Currency Trading.
Option on a futures contract Gives the purchaser the right to buy or sell a specified futures contract at a specified price and date. The purchaser has a right, not the obligation described by the futures contract. Exercise can create obligations under the resulting futures contract. Terms of the option and the underlying futures contract govern; review both. Contract-specific; not stated as a universal rule in the CFTC’s Basics of Futures Trading.
Perpetual Derivative with no fixed expiry. Contract-specific; no universal obligation or closeout rule is established by the general description. Uses a spot reference and periodic funding intended to encourage price alignment rather than expiry-based convergence. Funding payments pass between long and short positions; direction and calculation depend on the contract.

These are general structures, not a substitute for the current specifications of a particular listed or off-exchange product. The CFTC’s Basics of Futures Trading explains ordinary futures and options mechanics; its Customer Advisory: Understand the Risks of Virtual Currency Trading discusses virtual-currency contract risks; and its perpetual-contract materials describe the distinct funding design.

How do crypto futures work?

Contract terms determine what happens at expiry

A futures contract fixes the price and amount when the agreement is made. Some futures contemplate delivery of the underlying commodity; others permit cash settlement. Most are liquidated before delivery. For virtual-currency futures, the CFTC warns that customers may not receive the crypto itself. Many contracts settle in dollars using an index or auction price specified by the contract.

That reference matters: the contract’s settlement value depends on how the specified index or auction price is calculated, not simply on a quoted spot price chosen by a trader. Read the contract’s settlement method, expiry date and reference-price rules rather than assuming every product called a future works the same way.

Margin is collateral, not the full contract value

Futures margin generally represents only a fraction of the underlying exposure. That leverage makes the account more sensitive to market moves than an unleveraged purchase of the same notional exposure. If the market moves adversely, a trader may have to add funds or have the position closed. The CFTC warns that losses can exceed the initial investment.

What is an option on a futures contract?

The buyer of a futures option receives the right, but not the obligation described by a futures contract, to buy or sell a particular futures contract at a specified price and date. The contract’s terms determine how that right can be exercised and what obligations follow. Understand both the option terms and the futures contract it refers to; the word “option” does not make the resulting futures obligations disappear.

What is a perpetual contract, and what is its funding rate?

A perpetual is a derivative with no fixed expiration date. A conventional expiring futures contract can converge toward its reference price through expiry and settlement; a perpetual has no such expiry. It instead uses periodic funding payments intended to encourage its price to stay near the spot reference.

  • 30-50 minute play time

Under the funding mechanism described in the CFTC’s 2026 policy statement, when a perpetual trades above spot, longs pay shorts; when it trades below spot, shorts pay longs. The payment gives traders an incentive to take the side that may help arbitrage the difference. A funding rate is therefore a payment mechanism, not a guarantee that the perpetual will match spot.

Funding intervals, formulas, caps and settlement details vary by contract. Check the current specifications before relying on a general explanation of how funding works.

What risks should a trader understand?

Leverage and forced closeout

Because margin can cover only part of the exposure, a relatively small market move can have a large effect on the margin account. An adverse move may require additional funds or lead to a forced closeout, and the loss may exceed the initial amount posted. Margin should not be treated as a maximum-loss limit.

Volatility, settlement and platform risks

The CFTC identifies sharp price swings and flash crashes, manipulation, cyber risks, conflicts where a platform trades for its own account, and possible lack of customer safeguards on unregulated or unsupervised crypto cash-market platforms. Cash-market movements can affect derivatives prices. These are general risk warnings, not a claim that every platform has every problem.

Cash settlement creates a further contract-specific question: which index or auction price determines the payout, and how is it calculated? A difference between that reference and a price someone sees elsewhere can matter at settlement.

Fraud and due diligence

The CFTC advises customers to understand how a product can lose money, research a platform’s legitimacy, verify registration where applicable and reject promises of risk-free returns. Its futures guidance also recommends assessing financial resources and experience, understanding possible obligations and losses beyond the initial investment, and reviewing broker risk disclosures.

What is the U.S. regulatory context in 2026?

The following describes U.S. rules and agency statements; it should not be treated as a guide to access or regulation in another country. The CFTC says it primarily regulates commodity derivatives based on underlying commodities and has general anti-fraud and anti-manipulation enforcement authority over virtual-currency cash markets involving commodities in interstate commerce. Its futures guidance says that, with limited exceptions, commodity futures and options must trade through an exchange by persons and firms registered with the CFTC. It also describes registration obligations for people and firms handling customer funds or providing trading advice.

On May 29, 2026, the CFTC adopted a policy statement concerning perpetual contracts; it was published June 3, 2026. The statement says an accompanying order permitted a designated contract market to list a perpetual referencing bitcoin spot as a futures contract. For asset classes not contemplated in that order, the Commission’s view is that listings should go through case-by-case review under Regulation 40.3. The policy statement says it does not amend the Commodity Exchange Act or CFTC regulations. It does not establish that every perpetual is available to every U.S. customer or venue.

The SEC issued an interpretive release on certain crypto assets and transactions on March 17, 2026, effective March 23, 2026, with related CFTC guidance. It addresses application of federal securities laws, but it does not determine the classification of every derivative or underlying token. The treatment of a particular product depends on its facts and applicable law.

How can you evaluate a particular contract?

Before considering a crypto derivative, read the current contract documents and the venue’s applicable disclosures. The details that distinguish one product from another are practical, not merely technical:

  • What is the reference? Identify the underlying asset, index or other price measure and how that reference is calculated.
  • When does it expire? For a futures contract or option, check the expiry and settlement schedule. For a perpetual, check the funding schedule instead.
  • What are the parties required or entitled to do? Identify delivery, cash settlement, exercise rights and any obligations that follow exercise.
  • How are margin and closeout handled? Review the collateral rules, what triggers additional margin or closure, and what happens if the account cannot meet a requirement.
  • What costs apply? For a perpetual, verify the funding formula and timing. Check the product and venue documents for other applicable costs rather than assuming they are uniform.
  • What rules and protections apply to you? Confirm the product’s legal and regulatory status, your eligibility, and the venue’s registration or supervision in your jurisdiction.

The CFTC’s Basics of Futures Trading states: “Speculating in commodity futures and options is a volatile, complex and risky venture that is rarely suitable for individual investors or ‘retail customers’.” This is an agency warning, not a product recommendation.
