The latest USDA figures available in its September 2026 outlook show grocery-store food prices unchanged from July to August and 2.2% higher than a year earlier. Tariffs can add costs that may eventually reach consumers, but the available estimates do not predict a near-term jump in grocery prices.
What do the latest grocery-price figures show?
The USDA Economic Research Service’s September 2026 Food Price Outlook, updated September 25 using August price data, distinguishes the recent reading from its forecast for the full year:

These are U.S. food-at-home figures: they concern food bought for consumption at home, not restaurant meals. USDA’s annual outlook is not a week-by-week forecast and does not attribute its projected increase to tariffs.
How could tariffs affect the price at the grocery store?
First, they can raise an importer’s cost
A tariff is charged on an imported good. Federal Reserve Bank of New York economist David E. Weinstein, a co-author of the bank’s tariff research, explains that the U.S. importer pays the higher price unless the foreign exporter cuts its price to absorb some of the cost. The bank’s October 6, 2026 explainer says import prices rise almost one for one with tariffs in the first month after a tariff is raised. That describes import prices, not an automatic or equal increase on a supermarket shelf.

Then, some of that cost may reach consumers
In an August 2026 staff report, revised in September, New York Fed researchers Mary Amiti, Sebastian Heise, and Weinstein estimated that about 26% of the 2025 U.S. tariff increase passed through to consumer prices relative to less-exposed goods. In their analysis, 64% of that estimated increase came from direct effects and 36% from indirect effects. The researchers estimated that indirect effects took nine to twelve months to work through supply chains.
Those figures describe a study of 2025 tariffs and goods prices broadly. They are not a forecast for grocery prices, a retail pass-through rate for food, or a rule that can be applied to every product. The estimate also does not mean the remaining tariff cost vanished: the study’s pass-through measure concerns consumer prices relative to less-exposed goods.

Which groceries are most exposed?
The available evidence does not establish which grocery categories currently face the highest effective tariffs or how much of any tariff is reaching their retail prices. Naming specific foods as the most affected would require current tariff schedules and import data by commodity and country, alongside evidence about how costs move through retailers and suppliers.
USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Trade of the United States data provide agricultural trade figures by month, country, and commodity. The page was updated September 8, 2026, and listed October 9 as its next update. Trade data can help show where imports come from and how much is traded; by themselves, they do not rank grocery items by tariff exposure or show the tariff-related change in a shelf price.

What does the 2026 beef measure show?
A presidential proclamation dated August 26, 2026 expanded the 2026 in-quota quantity for specified lean beef trimmings by 300,000 metric tons, split across three tranches. This is a policy change for a particular beef input, not evidence that all beef—or groceries generally—will become cheaper or more expensive. It illustrates why the effect on any food depends on the specific product and policy rather than on the word “tariffs” alone.

- Track the same items over time. Compare receipts or unit prices for the products and package sizes you regularly buy. A smaller package at the same price can raise the unit cost even when the shelf price looks unchanged.
- Separate your household’s change from the national average. Your total depends on what you buy and how often. A change in your bill is worth tracking, but it does not by itself identify tariffs as the cause.
- Look for repeated changes, not a single checkout total. Compare several shopping trips or monthly totals; differences in quantities, promotions, and product choices can make one bill hard to interpret.
- Use the data that match the question. USDA’s food-at-home CPI measures broad grocery-price movement; import-price changes and trade data answer different questions. None alone establishes the tariff contribution to a specific item’s shelf price.
For now, the national grocery figures show modest year-over-year inflation and no month-to-month increase in August—not a tariff-driven surge in the coming weeks. Tariffs remain a possible source of cost pressure, but the cited research does not quantify a near-term grocery impact.
