The March 10, 2025, headline referred to a historical drop: the U.S. average gasoline price reached $3.03 per gallon after declining for three consecutive weeks, according to GasBuddy figures reported by Forbes. Tariff uncertainty was part of the backdrop, but the report did not establish tariffs as the cause of the weekly decline.
What the March 2025 report said
Forbes reported that the national average fell 0.6 cents from $3.04 the previous week to $3.03 per gallon. The reported average was also 8.9 cents below its level a month earlier and 36.7 cents below its level a year earlier. Why tariffs and falling prices could coexist
The report described competing possibilities, not one proven explanation for that week’s decline. Tariffs on imported Canadian oil could increase costs in regions exposed to those imports. At the same time, concern that tariffs or other economic pressures might slow growth could weaken expectations for oil demand, putting downward pressure on prices. Oil demand, OPEC+ production and seasonal patterns were also part of the broader context Forbes discussed.
Patrick De Haan, GasBuddy’s head of petroleum analysis, told Forbes: “Concerns about the direction of the economy could have a major influence on fuel prices in the months ahead, especially with the high level of uncertainty surrounding tariffs.” That was an assessment of potential influences, not evidence that tariffs caused the reported weekly drop.

Where gas was cheapest and most expensive in that report
As of Forbes’ March 10, 2025 reporting, Mississippi, Tennessee and Louisiana were listed among the least expensive states, while California, Hawaii and Washington were among the most expensive. How to read newer national price figures
Later price snapshots use different dates and sources, so they are not a continuation of the March 2025 figure on a like-for-like basis. The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s weekly release dated October 6, 2026, put the national average for regular gasoline at $4.354 per gallon for the week of October 5, down $0.111 from the prior week. AAA separately reported a national average of $4.41 per gallon on October 1, 2026, nearly seven cents lower than the prior week. The EIA and AAA numbers reflect separate reporting snapshots; their dates and attributions matter when comparing them. AAA Gas Prices
For a useful comparison, match the geography, fuel grade, unit and period: a weekly national average for regular gasoline is not the same measure as a daily state average, diesel price or crude-oil quote.
