Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

But price and brand names alone do not prove which watch keeps better time: the available manufacturer information identifies movements and specifications, not comparable accuracy results. The U.S. catalog examples below offer a practical shortlist, with the key caveat that prices, references and availability can change.
What “precision” means when comparing chronographs
A chronograph adds a stopwatch function to a watch; it does not, by itself, tell you how accurately the watch keeps time. The manufacturer information available for the models below supports comparisons of movement type and features, but not a ranking by measured timekeeping accuracy. Treat “precision” as a buying question to verify through model-specific accuracy specifications or independent testing—not as a promise implied by a chronograph label.
All listed prices and catalog examples here refer to U.S. brand pages. Check the exact reference and live price before buying; catalog list prices, promotions and retailer prices are different things.
Affordable chronographs to investigate
These are candidates supported by manufacturer catalog or product information, not a tested ranking. The Tissot and Citizen catalog pages show multiple models under the $1,000 ceiling. Confirm the exact variant: specifications and prices can differ within a collection.

The Tissot catalog includes case sizes from 38 mm to 45.5 mm across its listed examples. That range makes reference-level checking essential: a collection name is not a reliable substitute for the dimensions of the particular watch you are considering.
Choose the power source that suits your routine
Quartz
Quartz is explicitly identified for the Tissot options in the catalog and for Bulova Prestige 97B232. A quartz chronograph may suit someone who values straightforward day-to-day use, but the information here does not establish a comparative accuracy figure or service cost. Look up the exact reference’s accuracy specification and battery guidance if those details will decide your purchase.

Light-powered Eco-Drive
Citizen says Eco-Drive harnesses light; its technology information states that a fully powered watch can run for up to six months in complete darkness. This is Citizen’s stated capability, not an independent test result. If you prefer not to plan around routine battery replacement, check whether the specific Citizen chronograph you want uses Eco-Drive and read its care guidance. Citizen Eco-Drive technology
Mechanical
Do not assume a watch is mechanical because it looks like a traditional chronograph. The cited catalog details do not establish a mechanical movement for the listed Tissot candidates. Verify the movement for the exact model before comparing it with a mechanical watch or estimating its ownership needs.
Rank #3
Check fit, legibility and construction by exact reference
Case diameter and lug width
Diameter is a useful first screen, but it is not a complete fit measure. Tissot’s catalog spans 38 mm to 45.5 mm examples; Bulova 97B232 is 40 mm wide with 23 mm lugs. A wide lug measurement can affect how the watch sits across the wrist, so compare both dimensions with a watch you already find comfortable. The available specifications do not establish comfort on a particular wrist.
Subdials and readability
Check the actual dial layout rather than assuming all chronographs have the same counters or scale markings. Citizen’s Navihawk and other aviation-oriented catalog names may appeal to readers seeking additional information displays, but the catalog evidence alone does not establish that a busy dial will be legible for your eyes or use. Inspect product images and the reference’s manual before choosing.
Rank #4
Crystal and water resistance
These specifications are model-specific. Bulova lists anti-reflective sapphire crystal and 100 m water resistance for 97B232; those figures should not be transferred to other Bulova models or to another brand’s catalog listing. Check the manufacturer page for the precise watch and understand that a water-resistance rating is not a complete description of how to use a watch around water.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to verify a shortlist before buying
- Find the full reference number. A collection may contain several variants; use the exact product listing rather than relying on a family name.
- Confirm the movement and power source. Distinguish quartz, light-powered and mechanical models based on the maker’s specification for that reference.
- Compare the dimensions and dial. Check diameter, lug width, thickness if published, and whether the counter layout is understandable to you.
- Read the construction and use specifications. Verify crystal material, water resistance, warranty and care guidance on the specific product page. Do not infer one model’s specifications from another in the same line.
- Check the price at checkout. Separate list price from a temporary promotion and from third-party marketplace pricing. Confirm seller, exact reference, return terms and warranty coverage.
- Look for an accuracy specification if timekeeping is the priority. Compare manufacturer-stated tolerances only when they apply to the exact models and are expressed on a comparable basis. The cited catalog pages do not provide a cross-brand accuracy ranking.
Other names worth checking, not verified picks
A July 16, 2025 HICONSUMPTION roundup names Citizen Zenshin Chrono, Brew Metric Retro Dial, Autodromo Prototipo Chronograph, Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SSC813, Bulova Lunar Pilot, Christopher Ward C63 Valour and Lorier Olympia as candidates to investigate. That list is useful for discovery, not proof of current pricing, specifications or a ranked verdict. Verify each watch with its maker before treating it as a sub-$1,000 option. The same video description includes a Frédérique Constant Classics Quartz Triple Calendar Chronograph at $1,195, which is above the stated ceiling at that cited price and does not qualify without a verified current price below $1,000.
