What could generate money for Blackburn?
A permanent transfer after a loan can bring a fee to a parent club if the option is exercised on agreed terms. A sell-on clause can create a later payment, while a player leaving after a contract expires may depart without a transfer fee. Those mechanisms are distinct: a loan, by itself, does not prove that the former club will receive money later.
For these three players, the key evidence is whether a possible payment mechanism is documented. The San Diego FC announcement provides one for Duru, but not its price. The cited material does not establish a continuing Blackburn clause for Gilsenan or Mafoumbi.
Leo Duru: a purchase option, but no announced fee
San Diego FC announced that Duru joined Blackburn Rovers on loan through June 2026 with a permanent purchase option. The club’s acquisition announcement described it as a loan “with a permanent purchase option” (San Diego FC, acquisition announcement). That made a permanent move a possible route to a Blackburn payment at the time; it did not disclose the option price or guarantee a transfer.

On 6 March 2026, San Diego announced that the clubs had mutually agreed to terminate the loan. It said Duru made two appearances in the 2025 MLS regular season, but did not report an option exercise or income for Blackburn (San Diego FC, loan termination announcement). The loan therefore ended before its announced June 2026 end date.
The evidence supports a conditional possibility, not a forecast of a sale or a specific return. It does not establish whether Blackburn received any payment when the loan ended.

Zak Gilsenan: the reported move does not establish a Blackburn fee
Transfermarkt’s contract table listed Gilsenan’s Blackburn U21 agreement as ending on 30 June 2025, with an option for a further year (Transfermarkt player profile). A later secondary Blackburn season summary says he was not retained when his agreement expired, and a player summary reports that he joined Grimsby Town on a two-year contract in July 2025 (Blackburn season summary; Grimsby Town player summary).
These secondary accounts indicate a reported departure, but they do not establish that Blackburn retained his rights, received a fee or holds a sell-on clause. The listed contract option is not evidence that it was exercised.

Exauce Mafoumbi: a loan listing is not proof of future proceeds
Soccerbase lists Mafoumbi as a forward associated with Blackburn and on loan at Stade Lausanne from August 2025; its page shows no 2025/26 appearances (Soccerbase player record). This is a secondary listing, not confirmation of his current registration or contract as of 8 October 2026. It does not document a sale, a sell-on clause or another continuing Blackburn entitlement.

No verified option price, transfer fee, sell-on percentage or combined potential return for these three players is published in the cited material. The Football Association’s transaction register covers registrations from 4 February 2025 to 2 February 2026 and categorises transaction types, but it does not provide transfer-fee or future-clause details that would support a money estimate (The FA, transactions and transfers).

As a result, the headline’s “big money” remains a possibility rather than an evidenced forecast. Duru had the clearest documented route to a permanent move, but his loan ended without a publicly announced option exercise. For Gilsenan and Mafoumbi, the cited records do not establish a continuing Blackburn financial interest.
