What did Airbus say about bringing back the A380?
On 10 July 2024, Aviation News Online reported that Christian Scherer, then CEO of Airbus Commercial Aircraft, told Hamburger Abendblatt: “The door is closed, but it is not locked. In industry, nothing is ever ruled out.” The report also described the chances of a revival as extremely slim. “Not ruled out” is not the same as “planned.” It signals that Scherer did not declare a restart impossible; it does not establish that Airbus approved one, is preparing to build aircraft, or has a business case for doing so.
Has Airbus announced a restart since then?
No restart is announced in the Airbus materials reviewed here. At its 19 February 2026 annual press conference, Airbus discussed using an A380 for open-rotor engine testing. The aircraft was described as a convenient testbed: its size allows large engines to be tested while remaining small relative to the aircraft, and the discussion referred to its safety and testing capabilities. Airbus’s 29 July 2026 half-year results discuss production ramp-up targets for the A220 and A320 families, but do not announce an A380 restart. That is evidence about what these reviewed materials say—not proof that a restart could never happen. Airbus H1 2026 results
When did A380 production end?
Airbus Operations Limited’s 2024 report says the final five A380 deliveries took place in 2021. Airbus’s orders-and-deliveries table, valid at the end of August 2026, records 251 A380 deliveries. In March 2018, Airbus announced a plan for six A380s per year from 2020. That was a historical low-rate production plan, made before the programme ended; it was not the production rate at the end of the programme and is not a current target. Airbus’s 2018 announcement

A public expression of openness, a test aircraft, and a production programme are different things. The reviewed sources do not provide a current restart business case, customer commitment, or industrial plan. Those absences mean a restart is not substantiated by these sources; they do not establish that such information cannot exist elsewhere.
