Under Costco’s detailed current terms, Executive renews at $130 plus applicable tax and the reward is capped at $1,250 in any 12-month period. Spending $3,250 on qualified purchases would generate $65 at 2%, but that is only a break-even estimate: exclusions, eligible-cardholder rules, upgrade timing and benefits you actually use determine whether Executive is worthwhile.
What is the difference between Costco Gold Star and Executive membership?
Both tiers provide the basic Costco membership relationship. A member can shop Costco warehouses worldwide, Costco.com and Costco Business Centers, and use Costco pharmacy, optical, hearing-aid centers and gas stations. Each membership includes one primary member and one household card for a qualifying person in the same household, along with Costco’s satisfaction guarantee.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Executive is an upgrade rather than a separate access system. Its additional cost buys a 2% reward on purchases that Costco defines as qualified, plus access to selected service discounts or benefits. The headline reward does not apply to every Costco transaction, and the value of service offers depends entirely on whether you use them.

How much does each tier cost?
Gold Star: $65 per year
Costco lists Gold Star at $65 annually, before applicable sales tax. That is the baseline price for the access and household-card benefits shared by both tiers. Sales tax can make the amount charged at checkout differ by state, so compare the final total rather than assuming every member pays exactly $65.

Executive: a $65 upgrade and a $130 renewal
Costco’s detailed Executive benefits page describes a $65 annual upgrade over Gold Star. It states that the next renewal is billed at $130 total, plus applicable tax. Costco’s fee-change notice says the $130 fee took effect on September 1, 2024.
There is an inconsistency in Costco’s official pages: a membership campaign summary lists Gold Star at $65 and Executive at $120, while the detailed benefits and reward pages support a $130 Executive renewal and a $1,250 reward cap. The detailed terms and fee-change notice are the more specific sources for the current comparison. Because campaign pricing and checkout displays can change, confirm the amount shown when you join or renew, especially if a promotional page still shows $120.
The difference is not a second household fee. It is the incremental Executive charge over the Gold Star price. If both memberships are quoted with tax, compare the after-tax totals in your state; the reward calculation is based on the $65 pre-tax upgrade amount described in the terms.
How the Executive 2% reward works
The simple break-even calculation
The additional annual cost is $65. Dividing that cost by the 2% reward rate gives:
$65 ÷ 0.02 = $3,250
If every dollar in that $3,250 were qualified, the resulting reward would be $65. This is an arithmetic estimate, not a Costco guarantee or a published spending statistic. Real-world results can be lower because many purchases are excluded, purchases by ineligible people do not count, and the membership year affects when spending becomes eligible.
For example, $4,000 of fully qualified purchases would produce an estimated $80 reward ($4,000 × 0.02), leaving an estimated $15 above the $65 upgrade cost. If only $2,500 of a household’s spending qualifies, the estimated reward is $50, which does not offset the upgrade. The relevant figure is qualified spending, not the total amount charged at Costco.
A member spending exactly $3,250 in eligible categories is at the mathematical break-even point before tax, timing differences or the value of services. If some of that spending is gasoline or food-court purchases, the qualified total falls below $3,250 even though the Costco receipts may add up to more. Conversely, a confirmed service discount could create value even when the reward alone does not cover the upgrade.

The reward cap
Costco’s detailed reward terms cap the Executive reward at $1,250 for any 12-month period. At a 2% rate, reaching that cap would require $62,500 in qualified purchases ($1,250 ÷ 0.02). The cap is far above the spending level most members need to evaluate the upgrade, but it matters to unusually high-spending households and prevents assuming that 2% continues without limit.

The cap is a ceiling on the reward, not an additional fee. Once the maximum is reached for the applicable period, additional qualified purchases do not generate more than the stated maximum. Check the current terms if your spending is unusually high because Costco says program conditions can change.
Whose purchases count?
Costco’s terms focus on purchases by the primary member and the active primary household cardholder. Do not count shopping done by friends, relatives outside the eligible household arrangement or other people simply because they reimburse you. Purchases made before the membership is upgraded to Executive are also ineligible under the cited terms.
The household card is useful because an eligible cardholder’s qualified purchases can contribute, but it is not permission to pool every shopper’s transactions. Keep the membership account, cardholder status and membership-year dates in mind when estimating value. If another person in your household does most of the shopping, make sure that person is the active household cardholder covered by the terms.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsKeep records by membership year rather than treating a calendar year as the measurement period. The reward is tied to the applicable 12-month membership period, and Costco can change qualifying definitions or exclusions.
Which purchases are excluded from the 2% reward?
Costco specifically lists exclusions that include membership fees, gasoline and food-court purchases, along with other categories and transaction types. Certain exclusions vary by state, including some alcoholic-beverage and prescription purchases. Costco also says exclusions may change.
| Spending question | How to treat it when estimating Executive value |
|---|---|
| Membership fee | Do not count it as qualified spending; it is an excluded fee. |
| Gasoline | Gas stations are available to members, but gasoline is listed among reward exclusions. |
| Food court | Food-court purchases are listed as excluded. |
| Alcohol or prescriptions | Rules can vary by state; check the terms that apply to your location. |
| Purchases made before an upgrade | Not eligible under the cited Executive terms. |
| Purchases by people other than the eligible primary member or active primary household cardholder | Do not include them in a break-even estimate. |
Do not infer eligibility solely from where a purchase occurred. A transaction at a Costco warehouse, website or service counter still has to fit Costco’s qualified-purchase definition. Separate ordinary merchandise from excluded categories when reviewing your account history, and use the current terms for unusual transactions.
Costco’s reward FAQ also says Costco Travel excursions booked through the Viator partnership beginning June 4, 2026 do not count toward the annual Executive reward. The same FAQ describes access to more than 400,000 activities, tours and excursions worldwide and a 15% Costco-exclusive discount. Those partner terms are subject to change, so verify the current offer before relying on a travel booking in your calculation.
What happens if you upgrade during a membership year?
- Costco prorates the upgrade amount. The amount charged for moving from Gold Star to Executive is based on the months remaining in the current membership.
- Only post-upgrade eligible purchases count. Shopping completed before the upgrade does not become qualified retroactively.
- The next renewal uses the full Executive fee. Costco’s detailed terms state that the next renewal bills the full $130 Executive amount, plus applicable tax, rather than another partial upgrade amount.
- Recalculate when your renewal date arrives. A mid-year upgrade gives you fewer months to generate rewards before the first full Executive renewal, so the $3,250 estimate should be applied to the remaining eligible period, not automatically to the months before you upgraded.
If you are close to renewal, compare the prorated upgrade charge with the amount of qualified spending you realistically expect after upgrading. A short remaining membership period can make the first partial year less attractive even when Executive would be useful over a full future year.

- Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.

- Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
- Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
For a new member, the relevant comparison is simpler: decide whether the first full year of expected qualified purchases and usable benefits justifies paying the higher Executive price from the start. For an existing Gold Star member, ask Costco for the actual prorated upgrade amount and use your own renewal date rather than a calendar-year budget.
Benefits both memberships share
Executive does not create a different class of warehouse access. The core benefits Costco lists for the comparison are available at both levels:
- Shopping at Costco warehouses worldwide.
- Access to Costco.com and Costco Business Centers.
- Use of Costco pharmacy, optical and hearing-aid centers.
- Access to Costco gas stations, subject to local availability and operating rules.
- One household card for a qualifying person in the member’s household.
- Costco’s satisfaction guarantee.
Because these features are shared, they should not be counted as an Executive-only reason to upgrade. If Gold Star already provides all the access your household needs, the decision turns on qualified spending and additional offers you will actually use.

The worldwide-access language does not remove local rules or product restrictions. Availability, operating hours and state-specific purchase rules can differ, so treat the shared access as the membership framework rather than a promise that every service or item is available everywhere.
What extra value does Executive provide?
Selected service discounts and benefits
Costco describes additional benefits or discounts on selected Costco services for Executive members. The specific offer, eligibility rules and savings can differ by service and can change over time. Treat a service benefit as real value only when you have a foreseeable purchase and can confirm that your account, location and transaction meet the offer’s conditions.
For example, a discount on a service you would not otherwise buy has no practical value. Conversely, one substantial qualifying service purchase could make Executive worthwhile even if your warehouse spending is below the $3,250 arithmetic threshold. Do not assign a blanket dollar amount to “service benefits” without identifying the particular offer and its restrictions.
Separate a discount from a rebate in your worksheet. A discount reduces the price of a qualifying service; it does not necessarily increase the 2% annual reward. Count each benefit once and only after confirming that it can be combined with the price, promotion or service arrangement you plan to use.

Conditional delivery credit
Costco’s join page advertises a $10 monthly credit for eligible Executive members who use SameDay.Costco.com or Costco through Instacart on qualifying orders. The credit is conditional on the account, order and current offer terms; it is not a universal $120 annual payment. Check the live conditions before including any expected credits in your budget, and do not assume that an unused month carries forward unless the terms say so.

Because the credit is tied to qualifying orders, a household that never uses those delivery channels should assign it zero value. A household already placing qualifying orders can include only the credit it expects to receive under the current terms, not the maximum theoretical amount.
Gold Star or Executive: a decision framework
Choose Gold Star when your qualified spending is low or uncertain
Gold Star is usually the cleaner choice when your eligible purchases are comfortably below $3,250, most of your Costco budget goes to excluded categories such as gasoline or the food court, or other people do much of the shopping. It also fits a household that wants Costco access but does not expect to use Executive service offers.
Choose Executive when qualified spending is consistently high
Executive is easier to justify when the primary member and eligible household cardholder together can document more than $3,250 in qualified purchases during a full membership year. Build the estimate from receipts or account history and remove excluded categories rather than using a round total for all Costco spending.
Look for consistency, not one unusually large month. A household that exceeds $3,250 only because of a one-time purchase may not recover the upgrade cost in later years. A recurring pattern of eligible grocery, household and other qualifying purchases is a stronger basis for upgrading.
Choose Executive for a specific service benefit
A known, qualifying service discount or delivery credit can change the result. Add only the amount you can reasonably redeem under current terms. If the benefit is merely possible, list it separately from the guaranteed membership cost and the estimated reward.
Wait or upgrade later when timing is unfavorable
If renewal is near, upgrading immediately may leave too little time for eligible spending to offset the prorated charge. You can compare the remaining months, expected qualified purchases and the full $130 renewal before deciding. Remember that pre-upgrade transactions will not be counted.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical worksheet for comparing the tiers
| Calculation step | What to enter | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Gold Star annual fee | $65 plus applicable tax | This is the baseline cost. |
| 2. Executive annual fee | $130 plus applicable tax under detailed current terms | This is the full renewal cost; verify checkout pricing because one campaign page has shown $120. |
| 3. Incremental cost | $65 before tax differences | This is the amount the reward and usable benefits must justify. |
| 4. Estimated qualified purchases | Only eligible spending by the primary member and active primary household cardholder | Exclude categories and transactions Costco lists as ineligible. |
| 5. Estimated reward | Qualified purchases × 0.02, limited to $1,250 per 12 months | This is an estimate, not a guarantee. |
| 6. Usable Executive benefits | Confirmed savings from qualifying services or current delivery offers | Count only benefits you expect to redeem under their conditions. |
| 7. Net comparison | Estimated reward plus usable benefits minus $65 upgrade cost | A positive result suggests Executive may pay for itself; a negative result favors Gold Star unless nonfinancial preferences matter. |
Use a conservative estimate. If your spending varies widely, calculate a low, expected and high case rather than relying on the best month. A reward that barely exceeds $65 before tax and exclusions may not justify upgrading if your purchases are unpredictable.
Revisit the worksheet at renewal. Costco can change fees, exclusions, partner offers and delivery conditions, and the campaign summary has already differed from the detailed fee terms. Save the price and terms you relied on, then confirm them again when the next renewal notice appears.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the wrong Executive price. The $120 campaign figure conflicts with detailed terms supporting a $130 renewal. Confirm the amount at checkout or renewal.
- Applying 2% to every Costco purchase. Gasoline, food-court purchases, membership fees and other listed exclusions reduce qualified spending.
- Counting the whole household’s spending. Costco’s cited rules limit whose purchases qualify.
- Including pre-upgrade purchases. They do not become eligible after you upgrade.
- Ignoring the membership-year clock. A calendar-year total may not match the 12-month period used for the reward.
- Treating the reward as guaranteed cash profit. The $3,250 figure assumes every dollar qualifies and does not account for timing or exclusions.
- Assigning value to unused service offers. A discount matters only if you make the qualifying purchase.
- Assuming terms are permanent. Costco says exclusions can change, and partner or delivery promotions have their own current conditions.
- Counting the same benefit twice. Keep the 2% reward, service discount and delivery credit as separate lines in your estimate.
Bottom line for 2026
Gold Star covers Costco’s core access for $65 a year plus applicable tax. Executive costs $65 more, with detailed current terms indicating a $130 renewal and a 2% reward on qualified purchases capped at $1,250 per 12-month period. The straightforward $3,250 break-even estimate is useful as a starting point, but it is not a promise: only eligible cardholders’ post-upgrade purchases count, and several common Costco expenses are excluded. Choose Executive when your documented qualified spending and benefits you will actually use justify the extra cost; otherwise, Gold Star provides the same core membership access for less.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Costco Executive membership worth it at exactly $3,250 in spending?
Only if all $3,250 is qualified, made by eligible cardholders after upgrading, and measured over the membership year. At 2%, it produces an estimated $65 reward, merely matching the stated upgrade cost before taxes, timing and service-benefit value.
Do gasoline and food-court purchases earn the Executive reward?
Costco lists gasoline and food-court purchases among exclusions. They should not be included when estimating qualified spending.
Can purchases by the household cardholder count?
Costco’s terms focus on the primary member and active primary household cardholder. Purchases by unrelated people or people outside the eligible household arrangement should not be counted.
Do purchases made before upgrading count?
No. Costco’s cited Executive terms say purchases made before the upgrade are ineligible for the reward.
What if I upgrade close to renewal?
Costco prorates the upgrade charge for the months remaining, but you have less time to earn a reward before the first full Executive renewal. Compare the prorated charge with realistic post-upgrade qualified spending.
Why do Costco pages show both $120 and $130 for Executive?
A campaign summary page lists $120, while Costco’s detailed Executive and reward pages and its fee-change notice support a $130 renewal effective September 1, 2024. Confirm the live price at signup or renewal.
