The current U.S. Costco offer is a $65 Gold Star membership plus a separate $20 Digital Costco Shop Card reward for eligible new members—not a $20 membership. The reward can help offset future Costco purchases, but whether the membership pays for itself depends on what you buy and whether you use the card.
What the $20 Costco offer includes
Costco’s U.S. join page currently advertises a $20 Digital Costco Shop Card for eligible new Gold Star members. Gold Star costs $65 per year, plus applicable sales tax. The card is a signup reward, not a discount that changes the membership fee or its renewal price. Costco’s join page is dynamic, so check its terms when signing up.
To qualify for the direct Costco offer, you must not have held any Costco membership—Primary, Household, or Affiliate—during the previous 18 months. Costco also requires setting up auto-renewal at signup with a Visa credit or debit card, or a Mastercard debit card. The surfaced offer text does not state an expiration date.

Household card
One additional household card is included at no extra charge. Costco says the eligible person must be a spouse, domestic partner, or immediate family member over age 16 who lives at the same address.
Does the offer make Costco worthwhile for you?
Think of the $20 card as usable value only if you make purchases at Costco and redeem it. It does not establish that Costco prices beat nearby alternatives, that you will spend enough to recover the membership fee, or that your holiday shopping will be cheaper. Compare the annual fee with purchases you already expect to make rather than assuming the reward makes membership effectively free.

Costco’s FY2025 annual report counted 145.2 million total cardholders at fiscal year-end. Its U.S. and Canada renewal rate was 92.3%, and worldwide renewal was 89.8%. These are company-wide trailing figures, not forecasts of an individual member’s savings or renewal decision. Costco’s FY2025 annual report also notes that the renewal-rate calculation has a defined measurement period and exclusions.
Gold Star vs. Executive
Costco’s current comparison lists Gold Star at $65 annually and Executive at $130 annually, plus applicable sales tax; each includes one free household card. Executive costs $65 more and adds a 2% reward on qualified Costco purchases, along with additional Costco Services and Travel benefits. Qualification rules apply, so not every purchase earns the reward. Costco’s FY2025 report says the Executive reward is generally capped at $1,250 per year.

Executive makes sense to compare if your expected qualified spending and use of its added services justify the extra $65. Do not count all household spending as reward-eligible; review Costco’s terms for what qualifies.

- Check that you meet the 18-month no-membership condition, including Household or Affiliate status.
- If using Costco’s direct offer, confirm you can set up auto-renewal with an accepted card type.
