Manchester United’s January 2026 interim filing put a ceiling of £15.9 million on potential future settlement payments to Ruben Amorim and members of his coaching team. It also recorded a separate £6.3 million non-cash write-off of related intangible assets. Neither figure should be treated as proof that the full provision was paid, and the club’s later audited report does not isolate Amorim’s cost.
What Manchester United disclosed when Amorim left
Amorim and members of his coaching staff left Manchester United on 5 January 2026. In its interim filing, the club said a £15.9 million provision represented the maximum potential amount of future settlement payments. The filing also recorded a £6.3 million charge to write off related intangible assets. Manchester United’s interim filing said both charges would be recognised in the second half of the year ending 30 June 2026.
The categories describe different things. A provision is an accounting estimate for a potential obligation; its stated maximum is not confirmation that the club ultimately paid that amount. The intangible-asset write-off is a separate accounting charge, not an additional cash settlement.
How the figures compare
| Figure | What it represents | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| £15.9 million | Maximum potential future settlement payments | Provision in Manchester United’s January 2026 interim filing; covers Amorim and members of his coaching team, and does not establish the amount ultimately paid. Club filing |
| £6.3 million | Write-off of related intangible assets | Separate non-cash charge in the same interim filing, not a settlement payment. Club filing |
| £16.7 million | Reported payoff ceiling | The Guardian reported this amount for Amorim and his backroom staff, and separately described a £5.2 million non-cash impact from writing off contract-related costs. This is contemporaneous reporting, not the same accounting measure as the club’s £15.9 million provision. The Guardian |
| £8.209 million | Exceptional items | Manchester United’s audited report for the year ended 30 June 2026; the total includes Amorim departure costs, final restructuring costs and an expected pension-scheme contribution, so it is not an isolated severance figure. Manchester United’s 2026 annual report |
Why the later annual-report figure is lower
The £8.209 million in exceptional items in Manchester United’s audited full-year report is not a revised, standalone price for dismissing Amorim. It combines departure costs with final restructuring costs and an expected pension-scheme contribution. Comparing it directly with the interim provision would therefore mix a combined year-end category with an earlier maximum estimate for potential settlements.

The Guardian’s £16.7 million figure is also reported as a ceiling for the wider staff group, while the interim filing uses the precise accounting term “maximum potential amount of future settlement payments.” These figures should be attributed to their respective sources and not added together: the write-offs and settlement figures are different categories, and the reporting does not establish that every ceiling became a payment.

The available figures do not verify that headline comparison. Manchester United’s filing numbers concern potential settlement payments and an intangible-asset write-off; the audited exceptional-items figure combines several costs. The retrieved Liverpool financial-results summary does not state Virgil van Dijk’s transfer fee, so it cannot establish a like-for-like comparison. Liverpool’s financial-results summary does not supply a fee figure for this calculation.

Without a sourced transfer fee and a clear definition of “coaching spend,” a ratio or claim that one exceeded the other would be unsupported. The reliable takeaway is narrower: Manchester United disclosed a £15.9 million maximum settlement provision and a separate £6.3 million write-off, while its later audited report grouped Amorim departure costs with other exceptional items.
