Preston Street IGA in Como was named Western Australia’s best IGA at the March 2024 IGA Awards of Excellence, according to PerthNow. The family-run store also received gold awards for best produce and best bakery. These are the store’s reported 2024 results—not a claim about its current award status.
What Preston Street IGA won
PerthNow reported that the store received the best IGA in WA title at the ceremony in March 2024, along with gold for best produce and best bakery. The awards recognise dedication and innovation in shaping local economies and fostering community connections, but the report does not provide category criteria, scores or the names of other finalists. The result should therefore be understood as the award announced for 2024, not a scored ranking of every IGA in the state. PerthNow’s April 2024 report gives the award details.

A family business operating since 1988
Preston Street IGA had operated since 1988. Operations manager Renee Steenkamp told PerthNow that her parents, Pierre and Aylmyr Sequeira, owned the business, and that she, her sister and her sister’s husband had joined it. She said, “The store has been within the family since that time and my mum and dad continue to own it on their own.”
The family ownership fits the broader IGA model, but network figures should not be mistaken for details about this particular store. IGA Australia describes its network as more than 1,200 independent family-owned businesses on its About IGA page.

Its reported focus on local products
In a separate feature, Buy West Eat Best described the store’s interest in local small-batch foods, including artisan pâté, crackers and chocolate. It also recounted the store’s relationship with gluten-free baker Cupcakes for Lucy. The feature presents this as the store’s approach at the time; it does not establish that any named product is currently stocked.
Renée Steenkamp told Buy West Eat Best: “We always try to keep our finger on the pulse in terms of good local products because it’s a real point of difference for us, especially from the big chains.” She added, “People feel connected to products that are produced here.”
