The airline name or flight number shown in a search result may therefore not be the carrier whose aircraft you board. Before you buy, check the operating-carrier disclosure for every segment; then verify the rules that apply to that specific itinerary.
What is a codeshare flight?
Airlines use codeshares to market flights operated by another carrier. The airline selling or marketing the flight is the marketing carrier; the airline that performs the flight is the operating carrier. A single segment can appear with the marketing airline’s code and flight number even though another airline and aircraft operate it. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) describes code sharing as a marketing arrangement: DOT: Code Sharing.
Codeshare and interline are not interchangeable
A codeshare means one airline places its code on a flight operated by another. An interline arrangement can coordinate travel across airlines on one itinerary. These concepts can overlap, but the labels alone do not establish how a particular ticket handles baggage, check-in, or other services; confirm the terms for your itinerary with the airlines.
Which airline will actually operate your flight?
Look at each segment’s carrier disclosure, especially wording such as “operated by.” The airline whose code appears prominently in search results or on a booking may be the marketing carrier, not the operator. A connection can involve a different operating carrier on each leg, so check every segment rather than assuming the first carrier operates the whole journey.

For ticket sales covered by U.S. disclosure rules, DOT says carrier identity must be disclosed before booking. Its consumer-protection page collects information on 14 CFR Part 257 and related guidance: DOT: Airline Customer Service Dashboard. Disclosure requirements depend on the sale and applicable rules; use the booking details to identify the operator for each flight.
In the European Union, Regulation (EC) No 2111/2005 treats the identity of the actual operating air carrier as essential information. It also addresses what happens when the carrier is not known at the time of reservation, including informing the passenger of the carrier or likely carriers. Check the current regulation and whether it applies to your booking: Regulation (EC) No 2111/2005.

What should you compare before booking?
A codeshare can provide access to a wider network or additional fare and service choices, but those benefits are not guaranteed on every itinerary. When comparing options, assess the journey and the terms that affect its cost and convenience—not just the airline name shown in the search result.
- Operating carrier by segment: Identify who flies each leg, including any connection.
- Total journey: Compare travel time, connection length, and airport changes.
- Fare conditions: Review the ticket’s change, cancellation, and other conditions before purchase.
- Service policies: Confirm baggage, check-in, seat selection, and frequent-flyer terms with the relevant airlines. Policies may differ, and the codeshare label does not promise identical treatment.
What happens if a codeshare flight is delayed or cancelled?
First identify the operating carrier for the affected segment, then check the passenger-rights rules that apply to your route and circumstances. Responsibility is not governed by one universal codeshare rule across all countries.

For the EU passenger-rights situation described by the European Commission, responsibility for a codeshare flight lies with the airline operating it. The applicable rights and remedies depend on the itinerary and legal coverage; consult the Commission’s guidance for the relevant circumstances: Your Europe: Air passenger rights. A codeshare can let airlines market a broader set of destinations or offer more flight and fare choices through a partner. Those are possible benefits, not a guarantee that a particular itinerary will be cheaper, more frequent, or easier to use.

DOT says its review of code-sharing arrangements considers bilateral provisions, potential public benefits such as expanded services and fare options, and effects on competition. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) also discusses potential benefits, including more frequent service and passenger choice, alongside regulatory concerns, traffic-right requirements, and approval issues: ICAO: Air Transport Regulation.
