Skydance-owned Paramount completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery on October 6, 2026. CNN is now part of the same corporate group as CBS News, but it has not been announced as editorially merged with CBS. Mark Thompson remains CNN’s chairman and editor-in-chief. Skydance has pledged editorial independence, while the network’s future staffing, coverage, programming and digital operations remain unsettled.
Who owns CNN now?
Skydance-owned Paramount has completed its purchase of Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), CNN’s former parent. The Associated Press described the completed buyout as an $81 billion transaction; that is the deal’s overall figure, not a valuation of CNN on its own. Skydance’s October 6 announcement said the combined company would be named Skydance and would include CNN and CBS News alongside the companies’ studios, streaming services, television assets and sports rights.
The acquisition followed a roughly yearlong process. WBD’s 2026 proxy statement records that it entered into a merger agreement with Paramount on February 27, 2026. A previously proposed separation of WBD’s studio and streaming businesses from its linear networks is not the current structure: the whole-company acquisition has closed.
Who is leading CNN under the new owner?
Skydance confirmed on October 5 that Mark Thompson will remain CNN’s chairman and editor-in-chief, overseeing the network in the United States and internationally. The Associated Press reported that Thompson said he intended to lead with the same responsibilities and prerogatives he had before, while acknowledging that some operating details were not finalized. CBS News remains separately led by Bari Weiss. The networks therefore share a parent company, but the available announcements do not establish a combined newsroom or a change to CNN’s editorial leadership.

What has Skydance said it will do with CNN?
Skydance describes its strategy for the combined company as audience-focused, technology-forward and globally scaled, with storytelling and expanded consumer choice at its center. Its announced targets apply to the group as a whole, not to CNN specifically:

The scale of the synergies target makes questions about shared operations reasonable, but it is not evidence that CNN has a specific integration plan. The announcements and reporting available as of October 7 do not establish CNN newsroom consolidation, planned job reductions, a canceled show, a changed editorial direction or a new technology plan.

Will CNN’s editorial independence change?
Skydance CEO David Ellison pledged to maintain “complete” editorial independence. At a media event on October 6, he said, “We’re gonna make sure that CNN and CBS News are completely editorially independent.” Thompson welcomed the commitment, according to the Associated Press. These are public assurances, not evidence of how the owner would respond to a future story or dispute it finds uncomfortable.
A settlement with states requires the combined company to establish a News Editorial Independence Board within 180 days. The Associated Press, reporting from court documents, said the board is to have five active or retired journalists, each with at least 10 years of experience. Its stated remit is to set guiding editorial principles based on CNN and CBS standards, resolve disputes between network employees and corporate management, and monitor adherence to ethical journalism.

The appointment structure matters: the combined company’s board of directors appoints the editorial board’s members, and the editorial board reports to that corporate board. The settlement creates a formal monitoring mechanism, but it does not make the members independent of corporate selection. Journalism experts have also cautioned that owners can exert influence indirectly. The practical test will be how the safeguard operates when coverage is difficult or costly for the owner—not simply whether the pledge and board exist.

The ownership change is complete; its effects on CNN are not yet established. Useful evidence will be concrete decisions and the way the new oversight mechanism works, rather than assumptions drawn from the parent company’s targets.
