Why Some Social Security Recipients in Arizona Are Getting $90 Checks

The October 2026 $90 payment is a federal Medicare Part B premium rebate for certain beneficiaries—not a new Social Security benefit or Arizona payment.

The $90 checks expected in Arizona in October 2026 are a one-time federal Medicare Part B premium rebate—not a new Social Security benefit or an Arizona state payment. CMS says the rebate is for certain people enrolled in Original Medicare Part B; receiving Social Security alone does not qualify someone.

What is the $90 payment?

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) calls it the Medicare Improvement Fund Premium Rebate. It is intended to offset the October 2026 Part B premium, and CMS says eligible beneficiaries will receive one $90 rebate. In its October 3, 2026 FAQ, the agency described the purpose this way: “The Administration is making a $90 Premium Rebate available for Part B premiums to certain Medicare beneficiaries because the best way to improve Medicare is to put healthcare dollars back where they belong – in the hands of our Medicare beneficiaries – and make coverage more affordable.” Read CMS’s rebate FAQ.

Who qualifies for the rebate?

CMS describes eligible recipients as people who are enrolled in Original Medicare Part B, live in the United States, are not receiving premium assistance from Medicaid, and do not pay an Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA). People enrolled in Medicare Advantage are not eligible under the FAQ.

That means Social Security recipients in Arizona are not eligible simply because they receive Social Security or live in the state. The qualifying factor is Medicare enrollment and the exclusions CMS lists. CMS gives a national estimate of 20.8 million eligible Americans; its FAQ does not give an Arizona-specific recipient count.

When and how will the $90 arrive?

CMS says most eligible people are expected to receive a $90 direct deposit from the Social Security Administration on or around October 8, 2026. Those without direct deposit are expected to receive a Treasury paper check later in October at the mailing address registered with Medicare. The accompanying message for check recipients is described as “Medicare Improvement Fund Payment; $90 Payment to Offset October Premium.”

How to check eligibility or a missing payment

  • Eligibility: Call Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227), as CMS directs.
  • Payment status: CMS says to call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 beginning October 15, 2026.

How this differs from the 2026 Social Security COLA

The rebate is a single Medicare-related payment. It is separate from the recurring annual adjustment to Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced a 2.8% COLA for 2026: Social Security benefits payable in January 2026 reflect the increase, while SSI payments began reflecting it on December 31, 2025. SSA explains the 2026 COLA dates.

Arizona’s lack of a state SSI supplement is another separate issue; it does not determine eligibility for the federal Medicare rebate. SSA’s 2026 SSI guidance lists federal benefit rates of $994 per month for an individual and $1,491 for a couple, effective January 1, 2026. Those SSI rates are not the $90 rebate. See SSA’s 2026 SSI guidance.
