What ClearMotion announced in 2019
VentureBeat reported that the $115 million Series D was led by Franklin Templeton. The investors named in its January 9, 2019 report were Microsoft, Bridgestone, Qualcomm, World Innovation Lab, NewView Capital, Eileses Capital, and clients advised by J.P. Morgan Asset Management. VentureBeat’s 2019 funding report framed the technology around a “proactive ride”—a vehicle responding to road conditions to improve the ride, rather than reacting only after it encounters them.
CEO and founder Shakeel Avadhany discussed earlier automaker efforts, saying: “Starting in the 1980s, OEMs [original equipment manufacturers] tried a lot of solutions to try to do what ‘proactive ride’ does,”
What “digital chassis” means
In ClearMotion’s description, the digital chassis is not a single component. It combines suspension hardware, vehicle-control software, and road-surface information. The 2019 account described four electro-hydraulic ActiValves installed at the shock absorbers, alongside software and road data collected for cloud analysis.

On-car active suspension
ClearMotion’s current explanation of how the system works says ActiValves sense disturbances and actuators counter vehicle movement. Software coordinates the system across the vehicle’s four corners. The company presents this as a way to influence ride comfort and vehicle handling; these are company-described benefits, not independently established performance results in the sources cited here.
Road information from the cloud
ClearMotion calls its cloud-based road-surface intelligence RoadMotion. The company says this information can help vehicle systems respond before reaching a road feature, rather than relying solely on an onboard reaction after impact. ClearMotion also specifies that RoadMotion can locate road features with better than 20 mm accuracy; that figure is the company’s specification, not an independent measurement cited here.

How the 2019 funding story connects to later production
The funding announcement was an investment milestone, not evidence that the system was already in consumer vehicles. Later company announcements describe a move toward OEM integration and production:

What the funding and production claims do—and do not—show
The $115 million figure describes a 2019 financing round; it does not establish later sales, production volume, or vehicle performance. The subsequent NIO and factory announcements indicate that ClearMotion described its path as OEM and supplier adoption, rather than a consumer aftermarket kit. ClearMotion’s stated factory capacity is not evidence of how many units were produced, and its descriptions of ride, handling, or road-feature accuracy should be read as company claims unless independently verified.
