The Odyssey leads Christopher Nolan’s films by reported worldwide theatrical gross, followed by The Dark Knight Rises and The Dark Knight. The ranking below uses The Numbers’ reported lifetime totals for every film, retrieved October 8, 2026; the figures are nominal dollars, not inflation-adjusted.

Christopher Nolan movies ranked by worldwide box office

Each amount is The Numbers’ reported worldwide lifetime theatrical gross for the film. The ranking covers Nolan-directed feature films, using the release year listed by the database; it excludes shorts, television work, and films he produced or wrote without directing.

Rank Film Release year Worldwide theatrical gross
1 The Odyssey 2026 $1,770,588,564
2 The Dark Knight Rises 2012 $1,082,228,107
3 The Dark Knight 2008 $1,010,082,145
4 Oppenheimer 2023 $983,148,052
5 Inception 2010 $826,873,382
6 Interstellar 2014 $642,481,084
7 Dunkirk 2017 $528,068,280
8 Tenet 2020 $366,273,550
9 Batman Begins 2005 $356,766,632
10 Insomnia 2002 $113,622,499
11 The Prestige 2006 $104,407,366
12 Memento 2001 $39,719,431
13 Following 1999 $240,495

What the ranking says—and what it doesn’t

The top three films each exceed $1 billion in The Numbers’ current entries, with Oppenheimer next. The list answers which titles have the largest reported worldwide theatrical grosses; it does not rank critical reception, domestic box office, opening weekends, or earnings relative to production budgets.

These totals are not inflation-adjusted worldwide comparisons. The Numbers may display domestic inflation-adjusted figures separately, which should not be mistaken for an adjusted worldwide total. Gross box office also is not studio profit or a filmmaker’s compensation: theaters, distributors, marketing, and production costs all affect how much money is ultimately retained. Gross alone cannot establish profitability.

Why totals can differ between sources

Box-office databases may record rereleases and international reporting differently, so a ranking should use one source consistently. For example, The Numbers lists Oppenheimer at $983,148,052 worldwide, while Box Office Mojo lists $975,811,333. Those are different database totals, not figures to combine in the same ranking. See Box Office Mojo’s Oppenheimer listing.

The Odyssey also has a separate dated studio snapshot: in a September 12, 2026 announcement, Universal/NBCUniversal said the film would reach $1.685 billion globally that weekend and called it Nolan’s highest-grossing movie. The Numbers’ current entry reports $1,770,588,564. The figures reflect different reporting snapshots and/or database accounting; this ranking uses The Numbers for all titles rather than mixing the studio’s snapshot with other films’ totals. The studio announcement is available from NBCUniversal.
