Hunan officials estimated that the Wangu Goldfield in China contains more than 1,000 tonnes of gold resources to a depth of 3,000 metres. Xinhua reported the estimate on 21 November 2024 alongside an announcement-era figure of 600 billion yuan, or about US$83 billion. That is an estimated in-ground value—not a demonstrated mine valuation, recoverable reserve, or forecast of revenue.
Where is the reported gold deposit?
The Wangu Goldfield is in Pingjiang County, Hunan Province, China. Xinhua reported the provincial Geological Bureau’s announcement on 21 November 2024. The announcement described a large, deep gold-bearing area identified through exploration; it did not announce an operating mine.
How much gold did officials estimate?
According to Xinhua’s account of the Hunan Geological Bureau announcement, more than 40 gold veins were associated with an estimated 300 tonnes of gold within 2,000 metres. Extending the estimate to a depth of 3,000 metres brought the reported total to more than 1,000 tonnes. These are estimates attributed to the bureau, not a statement that the full amount has been proven economically recoverable.
What does “high-grade” mean here?
Xinhua quoted Chen Rulin of the Hunan Province Geological Disaster Survey and Monitoring Institute reporting a maximum grade of 138 grams of gold per tonne of ore in the 2,000-metre range. That is a reported maximum, not the average grade across the deposit. Chen also said, “Many drilled rock cores showed visible gold.” Visible gold in drill cores is an observation; on its own, it does not establish the size of the resource or whether mining would be profitable.

Is the deposit really worth $83 billion?
The 600 billion yuan figure—reported as about US$83 billion—was the Hunan Geological Bureau’s estimate associated with the reported resource, as covered by Xinhua in November 2024. It is best understood as an announcement-era estimate of the gold in the ground, not the value of a developed mine. The dollar equivalent depends on the exchange rate at the time and should not be treated as a current commodity valuation.
An in-ground estimate does not account for the amount that could ultimately be extracted, the cost of developing and operating a mine, or other commercial factors. The available cited reports do not establish a feasibility study, recoverable reserves, a mine-development timetable, or production from the Wangu estimate.

Is it the world’s biggest high-grade gold deposit?
That superlative needs qualification. In 2025, Xinhua reported a separate deposit, Dadonggou in Liaoning, with an estimated 1,444.49 tonnes of gold resources and an average grade of 0.56 grams per tonne. Its reported total exceeds Wangu’s reported estimate, but Dadonggou’s average grade and Wangu’s maximum grade describe different measures. They do not support a simple like-for-like ranking of “high-grade” deposits.
A meaningful comparison would need to account for resource classification, contained gold, average grade, exploration depth and the strength of the underlying assessment. The Wangu announcement figures cited by Xinhua are not accompanied here by a technical report detailing estimation standards, assay quality controls or an independent competent-person review. ScienceAlert reported in March 2025 that commentators questioned the deposit’s scale and feasibility; that is a reported caveat, not a technical finding.
