The best top-loading backpack is the one that fits your torso, carries your actual load comfortably and gives you the access you need on the trail. Choose by trip length and gear first, then compare fit, suspension, weight, organization and weather protection. A 32-liter day pack and a 40-liter hiking pack can both be useful, but neither is a universal pick.
What to compare before choosing a top-loading backpack
A top loader opens from above, which makes the design straightforward, but opening style is only one part of the decision. REI’s guide to backpacking packs, updated October 1, 2026, identifies capacity, features and fit as the central considerations. REI’s backpacking-pack guide also emphasizes that capacity is a starting point: gear bulk and packing style affect how much room you need.
- Trip and load: Account for your sleep system, food, water, layers and safety gear—not just the number of days away.
- Capacity: Treat liters as a rough measure of packing volume, not a promise of comfort or suitability.
- Fit: Compare your torso and hip measurements with the chart for the exact model and size.
- Access: Decide whether top-only access is sufficient or whether you want a panel or front opening to reach gear lower in the pack.
- Carry system: Consider the frame, hipbelt, shoulder harness, padding and ventilation in relation to your load.
- Organization and weather readiness: Check for hydration compatibility, quick-access pockets, trekking-pole attachments and an included raincover.
What size backpack do you need?
REI’s general volume guidelines are 30–50 liters for one to three nights, 50–80 liters for three to five days, and at least 70 liters for trips of five or more days. These are broad retailer guidelines, not guarantees: bulky gear, the season and your packing habits can change the size you need. A large pack can also encourage you to carry more than necessary.

For a day hike, start with the volume needed for water, food, layers and safety essentials rather than using overnight-trip ranges. The Osprey Hikelite 32 is one documented day-hiking example, but its listed capacity alone does not establish that it is the right size for every day hike.

How should a hiking backpack fit?
Torso length—not overall height—is the key measurement for choosing a pack size, according to REI’s pack-fitting guide. Locate the C7 vertebra at the base of your neck and the level of your iliac crests at the tops of your hip bones, then measure the distance between them. Compare that measurement with the size chart for the exact pack: ranges vary by model and brand.
The hipbelt should sit over your hip bones so your hips carry most of the pack’s weight. If possible, try the pack with weight in it; fit can feel different when loaded. Use this adjustment sequence as a starting point:

- Position the hipbelt over your hip bones and snug it.
- Tighten the shoulder straps until they wrap comfortably and closely without carrying significant weight.
- Adjust the load lifters without pulling them so tight that the pack or shoulder straps become uncomfortable.
- Set the sternum strap at a comfortable height and tension.
Strap adjustments cannot make an incorrectly sized torso fit correctly. A model’s size options, adjustment system and hipbelt fit all matter.
Frame, support and ventilation: match the pack to the load
An internal frame can help stabilize a pack and support many hiking loads. Frameless packs save weight but offer less support under heavy loads. Lighter designs may also have less padding, so they tend to make more sense when your load is lean and well controlled. Check the manufacturer’s load guidance for the specific model rather than assuming that a low pack weight means it will carry any load comfortably.

Backpanel design is another trade-off. A ventilated mesh panel may improve airflow, while the overall carry feel still depends on the pack’s fit, load and suspension. A feature list cannot tell you how a particular pack will feel on your body, so trying it loaded is useful when feasible.

- Define the trip and load. Write down what you will carry, including food, water, sleep gear, layers and safety items.
- Set a capacity range. Use trip-length guidance as a starting point, then account for your gear’s bulk and packing habits.
- Filter by fit. Measure torso length and check the exact model’s size chart; assess hipbelt fit as well.
- Choose access and features. Decide whether top-only access works for you, then check hydration compatibility, pockets, pole attachments and rain protection.
- Evaluate support for your load. Compare frame and padding with the weight you expect to carry, and try a loaded pack when possible.
