Bloomberg reported in August 2025 that five Chinese airlines were targeting allocations from a future Airbus order of about 500 aircraft. The figures came from unnamed sources, and the report said the deal was still awaiting an opportune announcement. Later airline purchase announcements resemble some of the reported targets, but the available sources do not confirm that they make up the 500-plane order.

Which Chinese airlines were expected to get aircraft?

Bloomberg’s 20 August 2025 report said China Southern Airlines, Air China and China Eastern Airlines each planned to claim about 100 aircraft. Xiamen Air and Sichuan Airlines were reportedly targeting agreements closer to 35 aircraft apiece. Bloomberg attributed the figures to people familiar with private details who were not named. The trade publication ch-aviation repeated the allocation account on 22 August and described the deal as still unannounced. Bloomberg’s report and ch-aviation’s coverage are reports of targets, not public final allocations.

Airline Reported target Status in the August 2025 account
China Southern Airlines About 100 aircraft Target reported by unnamed sources
Air China About 100 aircraft Target reported by unnamed sources
China Eastern Airlines About 100 aircraft Target reported by unnamed sources
Xiamen Air About 35 aircraft Target reported by unnamed sources
Sichuan Airlines About 35 aircraft Target reported by unnamed sources

The named targets do not account for 500 aircraft

The five approximate figures add up to about 370 aircraft: three lots of roughly 100 and two of roughly 35. Bloomberg and ch-aviation do not explain the remaining roughly 130, so there is no basis in those reports to assign the balance to other airlines or lessors.

Has the 500-plane Airbus order been confirmed?

Not in the sources reviewed through 8 October 2026. Bloomberg said Beijing was “still looking for an opportune time to announce” the deal, based on unnamed sources. That wording is not an on-record confirmation from a Chinese government official, Airbus or an airline. The later carrier-specific purchase announcements establish separate publicly reported agreements, but do not establish that those agreements formally fulfill the reported 500-aircraft order.

What later Airbus purchases did Chinese airlines announce?

Public reports in 2026 described several specific purchases. They should be kept separate from the 2025 allocation account because the reports do not link them to it.

Airline Publicly reported purchase Delivery timing Reported conditions Evidence and relationship to 2025 report
China Southern and subsidiary Xiamen Airlines 102 and 35 A320neo-family aircraft, respectively China Southern: 2028–2032; Xiamen: 2029–2032 Subject to shareholder approval and regulatory clearance Shanghai Stock Exchange-hosted China Daily report; it does not say these agreements fulfill the reported 500-aircraft order. Read the report.
China Eastern 25 A330neo aircraft, announced in June 2026 2029–2033 Not stated in the cited report Shanghai Stock Exchange-hosted Yicai report; it also notes a separate 101-aircraft A320neo order announced at the end of March 2026. Neither purchase is identified there as part of the 2025 reported mega-order. Read the report.

What does Airbus’s Tianjin production line add to the picture?

Airbus said the first aircraft assembled at its second Tianjin A320 Family final-assembly line was delivered to China Eastern on 16 September 2026. The aircraft was an A320neo; Airbus said it inaugurated the line in October 2025 and that it adds flexibility and capacity to its production network. The delivery shows ongoing Airbus production in China, but it is not evidence that the 500-aircraft order was announced or allocated. Airbus’s announcement also says its first Tianjin line had assembled and delivered more than 800 A320 Family aircraft since its inauguration in 2008.

Airbus’s demand figures are forecasts

In its Global Market Forecast 2026–2045, Airbus forecast demand for 8,830 new passenger aircraft in China, more than 20% of its forecast 42,060 aircraft in global demand over the same period. These are Airbus forecasts, not realized demand or independent measurements. Airbus also reported that China Eastern’s fleet at the end of August 2026 included 393 A320 Family aircraft, 56 A330 Family aircraft and 20 A350-900 aircraft. The fleet and forecast figures provide context for the market and airline, not confirmation of the reported mega-order.
