In November 2024, Xinhua reported that Hunan’s Geological Bureau estimated more than 1,000 tonnes of gold down to a depth of 3,000 metres. The €78 billion figure is a euro conversion used by a 2025 article—not a current market valuation or a measure of gold already mined.
Where was the gold discovery?
Wangu is in Pingjiang County, in Hunan Province in central China. Xinhua reported the announcement by Hunan’s Geological Bureau on November 21, 2024. The discovery is sometimes described in headlines as a Chinese gold “reserve,” but the reported figures are estimates at different depths, not evidence that all the stated gold is economically recoverable.
The headline’s exact €78 billion wording appeared in an Indian Defence Review article published February 13, 2025. Xinhua’s earlier account gave the stated value as 600 billion yuan, or about US$83 billion at the time. Indian Defence Review’s headline and article and Xinhua’s report of the Hunan announcement therefore provide two differently expressed versions of the story, not two independent valuations.
How much gold did the announcement estimate?
Xinhua reported two figures tied to different depth ranges. They should not be collapsed into a single quantity without preserving that distinction.

The deeper figure is an estimate attributed to the bureau, not a report that more than 1,000 tonnes have been extracted. The announcement as reported by Xinhua does not establish how much could be mined profitably or under what conditions.
What does “worth €78 billion” mean?
The euro amount is the headline article’s rendering of the 600-billion-yuan valuation reported by Xinhua, which described that sum at the time as about US$83 billion. It is not a separately measured geological quantity, nor should it be read as the deposit’s current value. A present-day market calculation would require a dated gold price and a stated method; the headline does not supply either.

Gold in the ground is not the same as saleable gold. A valuation based on an estimated quantity does not, by itself, account for whether the deposit can be mined, how much metal could be recovered, the costs of extraction, or the timing of any production. The sources cited for the announcement do not provide a mine plan, recovery rate, extraction costs, production start date, or a reserve classification under a specified reporting code.
Does the 138 grams-per-tonne figure describe the whole deposit?
No. Xinhua quoted Chen Rulin, an ore-prospecting expert with the Hunan Province Geological Disaster Survey and Monitoring Institute, saying that a tonne of ore in the 2,000-metre range contained a maximum of 138 grams of gold. That is a maximum sample value, not the average grade of the deposit. Chen also said, “Many drilled rock cores showed visible gold.” Those observations do not turn the maximum sample result into a deposit-wide average.

Is Wangu the same discovery as the 1,444-tonne deposit reported in Liaoning?
No. Wangu is in Hunan, and its announcement was reported in 2024. The 1,444.49-tonne figure belongs to Dadonggou, a separate deposit in Liaoning reported by the China Geological Survey in November 2025. The survey gave Dadonggou an average grade of 0.56 grams per tonne and reported the quantity above a stated elevation cutoff. These figures use different measures and technical descriptions, so they are not directly interchangeable.

The Dadonggou figures come from the China Geological Survey’s November 2025 report. They are useful context for distinguishing the two stories, not evidence that Wangu’s estimate was revised or confirmed.

What is known about Wangu’s development?
Xinhua’s account describes an exploration announcement, not an operating mine or a confirmed production project. It quotes Liu Yongjun, vice head of Hunan’s Geological Bureau, on the use of “new ore prospecting technologies, such as 3D geological modeling.” The cited announcement does not establish an extraction schedule or the commercial feasibility of mining the estimated gold.
China Geological Survey’s September 2026 report on mineral resources in 2025 says 200 non-oil-and-gas mineral sites were newly found nationally, including 16 gold sites. Those are nationwide totals; the report does not provide a Wangu-specific update.
